Chairman of Cross River State Traditional Rulers’Council, Etinyin Edet Etim Okon has called on politicians in Nigeria not to set the country ablaze by their utterances, antics and brand of politics.
He also advised the electorates to have the background knowledge of those they would like to vote before the main Election Day.
The monarch spoke to journalists in Calabar during an interview, saying Nigeria is more precious than the individual interests of politicians.
“I like to advise that the country is much more important than individuals’ political interests. And so, let me advise that politicians should refrain from utterances that can set the country ablaze.
“Everything should follow due process and in accordance with our constitution which is the grand norm. Nigerians should vote for someone who is good mannered, with the capacity to create impact and ability to lead, and not those who are struggling for their selfish interest,” Etinyin Edet said.
Edet also cautioned members of his council against making unguarded utterances and getting enmeshed in political controversy.
He said during these tense times, as royal fathers they should not allow themselves be dragged by politicians into any controversies.

He reacted to the alleged involvement of certain traditional rulers in a reported consensus meeting of some parties.
According to him, monarchs across the State were too enlightened to get enmeshed in such controversial issues.
He warned politicians against dragging Royal Fathers into partisan politics.
He said: “Traditional Rulers should be isolated from partisan politics but not from politics. This is because he is a father to all. Any Royal father who indulges in the game politicians play does not know his onion. We do not indulge in partisan, parochial issues about consensus or any matter about their primary election.”

2027: Jonathan’s Cousin Tackles Keyamo Over Ex-president Not Qualified Comment

A cousin of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Robert Azibaola, has criticised the Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and human-rights scholar Prof. Chidi Odinkalu for opposing the speculation that Jonathan may run in the 2027 presidential poll.
Robert said this in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday.
Keyamo had warned the Peoples Democratic Party against handing its ticket to Jonathan, arguing that his return bid would face legal obstacles since he had already been sworn in twice as president.

However, Robert said Jonathan did not welcome “unsolicited legal advice” and insisted the former president is “100% constitutionally and legally qualified to contest, if he chooses to.”
The statement read, “Dear Festus Keyamo (SAN), Chidi Odinkalu (Prof), I greet both of you. For the record, three of us are lawyers. We were all pro-democracy activists in the ’90s, and I was a better activist than both of you combined.
“Rule No. 1: Do not offer legal advice where none is solicited. GEJ (PDP) has numerous, more cerebral, more experienced SANs at his disposal who give him sound, unblemished professional legal advice.

“Please note: GEJ is 100% constitutionally and legally qualified to contest, if he chooses to. If he decides not to yield to the overwhelming calls to run, it will not be because he is unqualified.
“Your unsolicited legal view is not of any concern to him and will never be. Don’t waste your precious time dwelling on this. Or should I schedule a meeting so you can be properly educated on the subsisting court judgments on the matter—one of which your party, APC, was a party to?”
Robert added, “This is not a confirmation that GEJ is running, though.”
While Jonathan has not formally declared a 2027 presidential run, his rumoured return has already fuelled debate in political circles.

Keyamo Warns PDP Against Fielding Jonathan, Obi In 2027

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party risks serious setbacks in its 2027 presidential strategy if it opts for former President Goodluck Jonathan or ex-Anambra governor Peter Obi as its standard-bearer.
In a long post on his X account on Sunday, Keyamo said the opposition party remains in a “non-enviable position” after failing to zone its 2023 ticket to the South, a decision he said cost the PDP support in its traditional strongholds in the South-South and South-East.
Keyamo argued that nominating Jonathan carries a constitutional danger tied to section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which he suggested could bar anyone sworn in twice as president from contesting again.
“If he is fielded, the Party runs the RISK of NOT HAVING A CANDIDATE AT ALL,” Keyamo wrote, warning that such a legal challenge would ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court.

“The constitutional amendment was made AFTER the court judgment which cleared him (Jonathan) to run in 2015, so nothing is decided yet on that new amendment, hence I use the word ‘RISK’ advisedly. All the arguments as to whether the section can be interpreted to affect him will not be decided on Social Media, but at the Supreme Court.
“If he is barred from running AFTER nominations have closed and the PDP is declared as having no candidate, nobody should scream ‘judiciary is corrupt’ because such a large party saw the judicial danger ahead and deliberately ignored it.”
He added that the party would bear responsibility if it ignored the legal risk and lost its candidacy after nominations closed.
“All the arguments … will not be decided on social media, but at the Supreme Court,” he said.
Keyamo also dismissed the likelihood of a successful South-West flagbearer for the PDP.

“If the PDP decides to field its most attractive S/West candidate, no other region of the country will vote for a fresh Yoruba candidate who would be eligible for a fresh two terms in office.
“And that candidate will battle with the well-oiled APC structures in the S/West. You need a majority of at least 3 to 4 regions in Nigeria to win the Presidency.”
On Peter Obi, the minister said bringing the former Labour Party candidate into the PDP fold would not solve the party’s problems.
He suggested doubts about Obi’s credibility, plus his past one-term pledge, could dilute support among his core followers.

“The principled ones amongst the ‘obidients’ will see him as going back to his vomit … and may not be too vociferous in their support anymore,” Keyamo wrote.
Concluding his assessment, the minister blamed the PDP’s current predicament on what he called its “original sin” of not zoning the 2023 ticket to the South.
“The young social media warriors may lampoon anyone talking about these zoning sentiments, but that is the REALITY of our politics,” he said, adding that unless “something EXTRAORDINARY happens, the Party may have to wait till 2031.”
The PDP has not publicly responded to Keyamo’s comments.
