The youths of the African Church, Akwa Ibom State chapter have announced their decision to take active part in electing credible leaders in the forth coming elections.

Speaking in a New Year Solemn Assembly of the Church, the provincial youth president, Prince Enobong Oku recalled how a member of the church was murdered inside the church during the previous administration and charged members to take their destinies into their hands by voting any candidate that preaches peace and known to be God fearing.

According to him, “The church cannot afford to go back to the era of intimidations and terror. In tune with the season which places on us the responsibility of facilitating good governance through our involvement in political activities, I charge all the youths and the church as a whole to join the trend and not sit on the fence.

“In the previous administration, a member of the African Church was gruesomely murdered in church. It is against this backdrop that we unanimously state that the church does not want to go back to those dark days of politically-motivated killings. Therefore, the youth of The African Church have resolved to support the succession plan of the governor for the peace we are enjoying presently to be sustained.

“The biggest blessing God has given to the church in Akwa Ibom is peace, and we will protect it by all means.”

In his homily earlier, the former Primate of the Church, Most Rev. Emmanuel Udofia urged Christians especially those in politics not to be discouraged by criticisms and attacks saying that when a Christian is in God’s plan to rescue mankind, he would be faced with persecutions as the Apostles of Christ faced.

He said, “If you make yourself available to serve the people, be ready to face persecutions, be ready to face obstacles but have this at the back of your mind, if you are in plans of the Almighty God, you will surely come out victorious. Anyone on the right path to fulfill God’s purpose is bound to face opposition.”

In his remarks, one of the gubernatorial candidates in the state Pastor Umo Eno urged the people to get their PVCs and vote a credible candidate.

He noted that the calculated attempts at distracting him with frivolous litigations, coupled with the endorsement by Akwa Ibom people had made him to be determined to win the election and serve the state with all his heart and “righteous anger.”

He added that his motivation is rooted in a desire to see Nigeria work, not personal ambition.

The former Anambra State governor also challenged anyone to investigate his past political campaigns, maintaining that he has never been involved in electoral malpractice, thuggery, or ballot box snatching.

He said: “I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation. By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.

“I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter. There are some traits associated with desperation, which in no way are in any of my political behaviours in the past and now, like engaging in overly aggressive rhetoric or actions to prove a point or gain attention; becoming overly defensive or reactive to criticism, often to the point of appearing paranoid.

Making unrealistic or unfulfillable promises to win support or approval, resorting to personal attacks or character assassination to discredit opponents, or frequently changing positions or policies to suit immediate political needs.

“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice. I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name. I have always chosen the path of peace, principle, and civility.

“In four years, we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas. For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure.

“Within the same period, we ensure that the rule is sacrosanct and the rule of law is strictly followed. Within the same period, we can conduct free, fair, and credible elections.”
