The need for youth to fully participate in Nigeria’s electroal process took the centre stage Wednesday at an event organised by a Non Governmental Organization, Gatefield, aimed at encouraging citizen participation in politics.
The event, themed ‘Frame Democracy,’ was held at Doctor’s House, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) with over 200 students in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Charles Eghweree, who was the keynote speaker, urged Nigerian youths to be actively involved in the nation’s political process rather than taking the back seat.

Dr. Eghweree, who is Head of Political Science Department, said that youths refusal to participate in the nation’s politics gives room for those who are not qualified to mount leadership positions.
He added that these unqualified persons now decide the fate of the majority of the people due to youths non-participation in politics.
According to Dr Eghweree, to take their rightful place in the scheme of things and put the country in the right footings, they (the youths) must ignite and develop their interest in politics.

The political scientist, while stating that the present day politicians have succeeded in using poverty as weapon against the masses, maintained that the Nigerian youths still stand the chance of redeeming themselves by developing interest in politics through participation and possibly registering a political party of their choice.
Earlier, Project Manager of the organisation, Mahmud Jafar, said the aim of the programme was to train and enlighten over 600 students across both private and public schools who, according to him, will graduate and change the political narrative in the country.
He further explained that the programme aims at actively involving young Nigerians in discussions and conversations about democracy and concerning authoritarian trends in the country.

He said that the organisation decided to focus on political science students to help drive the process of educating and sensitizing the youths to be politically inclined with the view of correcting the mistakes of the past leaders
He added that the future of the country rests squarely on their shoulders.
Some of the students, Oshoke David and Okolie Isabella, thanked the organizers of the event for coming up with such a programme which they both said, have spurred them to be actively involved in the nation’s politics.
The event climaxed with panel discussion on the subject.
