Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu has disclosed that he was inexperienced in the education sector before President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him in 2015.

Adamu, who is the longest serving minister revealed this at a valedictory session with officials and heads of parastatals of the Ministry on Thursday.

He, however, was credited for appointing some professors of education and other good hands, with the help of the officials of the Federal Ministry of Education that helped him record some success.

“I didn’t know anything about the education sector when I was appointed Minister except superficially. But when Buhari decided to make me Minister of Education,” Adamu said.

“I called some people to assist me to work on a policy document on education because I was a novice in the sector. I shared my idea with them and they assisted me greatly, and I remain grateful to them for these years.”

The minister appreciated the President who found him worthy and trusted him with such a responsibility, “even when I was apparently not ready and unprepared for such task”.

He said, “I was busy making recommendations and suggestions to the President on who to appoint into his cabinet in 2015. All of a sudden, he announced my name to my surprise and that was it. We worked together till 2019.

“In 2019, I approached the President and suggested that he reshuffle his cabinet because, in the eyes of many, it was unusual in our society for a President to work with the same Ministers for four years. Buhari had graciously allowed his Ministers to stay in office for four years. Ordinarily, Ministers stay in office for two years before they are reshuffled.

“But I know him very well and I knew it will be difficult for him to do that. But I decided to make it easy for him by promising to bring people that would do the job better for me and others who served as Ministers in the first tenure.”

“I promised him that I will give him names of competent people from at least, 19 northern states. So, I suggested to him to drop all the Ministers that worked with him in the first tenure including me, but I knew it would be difficult for him. But to confirm that I can do the job, I gave him a name from Bauchi state whom I had expected him to replace me within the cabinet. That was how Maryam Katagun became Minister of the Federal Republic.”

A student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, Samuel Adegoke has reportedly committed suicide by drinking chemical substance after losing his fees and that of his friend to an online betting platform.

It was gathered that the deceased reportedly used his school fee to play online betting on Friday but lost.

Adegoke, who was a National Diploma II student of Electrical Electronic Engineering, reportedly committed suicide on Monday, when his colleagues were preparing for their first-semester exam.

He reportedly swindled his friend, who shared a room with him by getting his password and used his fee to play and also lost.

It was gathered that the school had warned that no student would be allowed to take an exam without completing their registration.

Adegoke was reportedly rushed to the school clinic, where he was later referred to a specialist hospital outside the school in Ilaro, before he was pronounced dead.

Confirming the incident, the Deputy Registrar, Public Relations of the school, Sola Abiala said the school quickly referred him to a specialist hospital to save his life, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he was admitted to the hospital.

Speaking with our correspondent on the phone, Abiala said, “he died on Monday morning while the exam was about to start.

He said it was detected at the specialist hospital that the late student took a chemical substance.

Efforts to get reaction from the Police was not successful, as calls put across were not answered.

A Federal High Court sitting in Akure on Tuesday remanded four persons for Registration Impersonation and Examination malpractices of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam in Ondo State.

The registration impersonation suspects are Timilehin Akinwale, Olayinka Mustapha and Peter Okereke, while Feranmi Adesuyi was arraigned for examination impersonation.

According to the charge sheet, the first three defendants committed the impersonation act on Feb.15 at Aina Awaw International College,Ilu Abo, Akure,which was a CBT centre for Jamb registration and examination.

“That you OKEREKE PETER (m), 29yrs, AKINWALE TIMILEHIN(m),22yrs and MUSTAPHA OLAYINKA IDRIS (m), 23yrs on or about the 15th day of February, 2023 at AINA AWAW INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE ILLU-ABO, a CBT Centre for JAMB Registration and Examination, Akure Ondo State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court did impersonated FOLARIN DAMLOK, KAZEEN IMISI OLAMILEKAN and TIJANI BABATUNDE SHEUN respectively during CBT JAMB registration, contrary to section 3(3)(c) of Examination Malpractice Act, Cap E15, LFN, 2004 and punishable under the same section.”

It said that the offense was contrary to section 3(3)(c) of Examination Malpractice Act, Cap E15, LFN, 2004 and punishable under the same section.

Also, Feranmi Adesuyi committed the said offense on April 28 at Amable Nig Ltd CBT Centre in Owo, during the 2023 JAMB examination

According to the charge sheet, “That you FERANMI ADESUYI (m), 29YRS, on or about the 28th day of April, 2023 at AMABLE NIG LTD CBT CENTER, Owo, during the 2023 JAMB Examination in Ondo State, within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did conspire with one SANUSI TUNDE who is now at large, to complete his registration and also impersonate the said SANUSI TUNDE for the JAMB Exam and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 10 of Examination Malpractices Act, Cap E15, LFN, 2004 and punishable under section 3(2)(c) of Examination Malpractice Act, Cap E15 Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

The accused enters a plea of innocence and a plea of not guilty to the charges

The prosecuting counsel, Moses Osimhen urged the court to remand the suspects at Olokuta prison pending the date for hearing.

The defendants’ counsel , Clement Falana and Austin Agbounghale, however pleaded for the court to grant the bail of the suspects as it was a bailable offense.

The presiding judge, Justice T B Adegoke, thereby ordered the suspects to be remanded at Olokuta Prison and adjourned the case till July 12 for hearing.
