5 Things To Know About Late Highlife Singer Godwin Kabaka

Legendary highlife singer Godwin ‘Kabaka’ Opara earlier today passed away at the age of 77.
Kabaka’s record label, Derda Promotions announced his demise in a statement on Friday.
“Derda Promotions is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our esteemed artist, Godwin Kabaka Opara, an icon who pioneered and revolutionized Highlife music, on March 21st, 2024,” the statement reads in part.

He was a talented and popular songwriter and guitarist whose contagious highlife music delighted many admirers.
Here are five things to know about the late singer:
He hails from Umuawara Umuoye Imerienwe, Ngor Okpala, Imo State.

Just after the Nigerian Civil War, Kabaka, alongside Dr Sir Warrior, Dan Satch Opara, Nathaniel Ejiogu, and Prince Ichita, formed the Oriental Brothers International. The band released a total of 39 studio albums, 7 compilations, and 4 extended plays.
He received a gold disc award after the release of the ‘Five Fingers’ album. Also, his hit single ‘Mangala’ received a silver disc award.
In 1977, he formed his group, Kabaka International Guitar Band, following unresolved differences among the Oriental Brothers band.
Kabaka’s highlife music was heavily influenced by the late Rex Jim Lawson.

Nigerian music star, Adekunle Gold has received a remarkable honour with a street in Lagos named after him.
The 38-year-old singer shared the heartwarming moment with fans on Instagram, posting a video that captured the unveiling ceremony.
In the clip, Adekunle Gold was seen alongside his wife, Simi, and their daughter, Deja, as they jointly pulled back a veil to reveal the new signpost bearing his full name , “Adekunle Kosoko Street.”
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, the “Sade” crooner wrote:

“Adekunle Kosoko Street. The city that raised me now carries my name. Thank you, Lord, for my many blessings.”
The honour carries a deep sense of history for Adekunle Gold, who hails from the Kosoko royal family of Lagos Island.
His lineage traces back to Oba Kosoko, the former king of Lagos who reigned from 1845 to 1851.
