94-year-old Ordered To Appear Before Edo Properties Protection Committee Over Alleged Land Grabbing

Published

on

The Edo State Private Properties Protection Committee (EPPPC), has directed one Elder Ikpomwosa Akewe, 94, to appear before the committee on Sept. 21, 2023 over alleged land grabbing.

The committee headed by Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga (Rtd) is charged with the task of supporting government’s efforts by checking the activities of land grabbers and property speculators across Edo State.

It was gathered that Akewe had allegedly connived with some youths, selling 2000feet by 2000feet of Evboro community land in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state to the Nigeria Medical Association Cooperative, Edo branch.

His Royal Highness, Festus Osagiede, the head of five neighbouring communities; Evboro, Iguogie, Iguotor, Iguedobor, and Okhonmwenne, had petitioned the committee to stop the NMA from acquiring the land and Akewe for further sales of Avboro land.

He said the last substantive Odionwere of Evboro ( late Elder Peter Oghayerio ) died July 24, 2021, and the second in command (next to the late Odionwere) is Elder Alfred Emwinyomweanru, 98, who is in acting capacity, and not Akewe.

He added that the Acting Odiowere would be crowned by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II after three years of last Odionwere departure.

According to him, the respondent, Akewe, is the third in command and was suspended because of alleged “abominable crime committed by him in the community.”

Osagiede, who was present before the committee with the acting Odionwere (Alfred Emwinyomweanru) said he had reported the matter at the Oba of Benin palace and he was asked to address the issue hence his petition.

He noted that the Evboro community has 10 elders that preside over activities in the community, yet the respondent singlehandedly sold the land to NMA cooperative.

He also told the committee that the acting Odionwere will remain in acting capacity until after three years of late Odionwere before he would be crowned as substantive Odionwere.

Consequently, the Chairman of the committee, Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga directed the police to do the needful by ensuring that the respondent appear before the committee in the next adjourned date of Sept 21, 2023.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, SP Charles Akhueche told the committee that the respondent, Akewe was absent because of his court case at High Court in Okada.
