Abia: Police Arrest Community Leader Over Vandalisation Of Palm Oil Plantation Equipment

The Zone 9 Command of Nigeria Police Force in Umuahia has confirmed the arrest of the President General of Okon Aku Ohafia, Ohafia LGA, Mecha Ume, for allegedly vandalising equipment at an oil plantation located in Okon Aku.

Mecha and another community member were arrested on Saturday after some suspects, who were earlier arrested in connection with the incident last Wednesday, linked them to the crime.

It would be recalled that three persons were last week arrested by men of the Nigerian Army while trying to cart away some equipment they vandalised in the oil plantation.

They were handed over to the Zone 9 Police Command for further investigation.

Giving an update on the incident on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Zone 9 Police Command, Umuahia, Marc Bruno, confirmed that the President General was arrested in connection with the matter.

He added that investigations are still ongoing.

The Eastern Region Estate Investment (EREI) is a palm oil plantation established by Dr Michael Okpara, the then Premier of Eastern Region in 1961.

Abia State government previously warned vandals to stay off the property as plans were ongoing to revive it.

A Sharia Court in Kaduna, Kaduna State, has dissolved a two-year-old marriage between a couple, Hanira Sanusi and Alyu Yunusa, over irreconcilable differences.

The judge, Malm Salisu Abubakar Tureta, dissolved their marriage following a petition for divorce filed by Harira.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Harira accused Aliyu of calling her parents names and humiliating her.

“He will often throw out my suitcase and other belongings.

“He seized my wedding gifts and humiliated me,” she said.

She prayed the court to order Aliyu to allow her access to her belongings.

On his part, Aliyu, who did not deny the allegations, apologised to her in court.

Aliyu granted the request of Sanusi and made one pronouncement of divorce to her.

A Grade 1 Court in Kubwa, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dissolved a 12-year-old marriage between a couple, Hadiza Isiaku and Mohammed Ibrahim, on the grounds of battery.

Hadiza who dragged her husband to court stated that she was tired of being abused.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the presiding judge, Muhammed Adamu, delivering his judgment also ordered the petitioner to observe ‘Iddah’ (waiting period to be observed for three months) before contracting another marriage.

Hadiza who resides in Kubwa, Abuja said that her 12-yer-old marriage was marred by constant beatings from her husband.

She also said that Mohammed accused her of sleeping around with men and insulting her mother.

The mother of four said their marriage was contracted under Islamic law.

A 30-year-old mother, Ismuha Ahmed, has prayed a Sharia Court 11 sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, Kaduna State, to grant her custody of her two male children aged six years and seven years.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the complainant, who resides at Kontagora Road, said the children had been under the care of their father, Abdullahi Zakariyya, since their marriage was dissolved in September 2020.

“I also want the court to assist me in retrieving from him the money he is owing me, a total of N27,000, “ she said.

On his part, the defendant acknowledged the debt he owed and said he would pay her in installment to the sum of N5,000 monthly.

The judge, Malam Murtala Nasir, adjourned the case.
