Afolayan Mocks N2bn Revenue Claims, Funke Akindele Fires Back

…I don’t want 2 billion streams and ₦10 million returns —Afolayan

…Don’t allow jealousy burn you —Akindele

A fresh storm has hit Nollywood after filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, openly questioned the hype around blockbuster cinema figures, insisting that celebrated numbers do not always reflect real earnings for producers.

Speaking at the watch party of his Netflix series, Aníkúlápó: The Ghouls Awaken, Afolayan took aim at what he described as the industry’s fixation on big cinema milestones, warning that behind the loud celebrations often lies a quieter financial reality.

“I don’t want two billion streams at the cinemas and end up receiving ten million naira,” Afolayan said. “People celebrate numbers, but after deductions, fees, and the way distribution is structured, the producer may hardly have access to that money.”

The award-winning director stressed that films are sometimes announced as record-breaking successes, yet the financial outcome for the producer tells a different story.

A film can be said to have crossed a massive benchmark, but after everything is settled, the producer might barely see ten million naira,” he added.

Afolayan also addressed industry comparisons involving his KAP Film Village and Resort in Oyo State and the film village owned by actor Ibrahim Chatta, dismissing suggestions of rivalry.

“There is no competition,” he said, noting that both ventures serve different creative purposes.

As the conversation unfolded, veteran actress Sola Sobowale reportedly cautioned Afolayan about diving too deeply into figures often celebrated when films hit cinema milestones, highlighting how sensitive the subject has become.

The comments, however, did not go unanswered.

In what many interpreted as a direct response, Funke Akindele fired back, urging creatives to focus on building their own paths rather than questioning the success of others.

If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path rather than watering down the efforts of people,” Akindele said. “Don’t allow jealousy to burn you. The sky is big for everyone to fly.”

She further dismissed any suggestion that she was responsible for slowing anyone’s progress in the industry.

“I am not the one hindering your progress,” she added. “You can go ahead and create your marketing strategy to promote your business or hire a company to handle it. Opportunities are endless and everybody has their path to follow.”

“She told me, ‘did I ask you to draw my name? I don’t like it. Don’t do tattoo again. God said don’t mark your body,’” he recalled.

Shank, however, said he challenged her stance by pointing out what he described as a contradiction.
