Alleged Attack At Edo Tribunal: APC Fingers Opposition, Opts For Self Defence In Next Sitting

Published

on

Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the opposition Peoples Democratic Party of carrying out “serious attack” on its members yesterday, December 9, 2024, at the premises of Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal, which commenced sitting in Benin City.

The party lamented that the “latest attack is one too many attacks” on its members “since the electioneering process that culminated in the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State.”

In a statement signed by Emperor Jarret Tenebe, state chairman of the APC, said in yesterday’s attack, members of the party were caught unaware, alleging that the thugs were hired to “disrupt the tribunal proceedings and maim APC leaders, members and lawyers.”

“They violently attacked our members and some lawyers representing other political parties and in the process, left several persons with severe injuries.

“These thugs who were seen in branded T-shirts and caps, came with battle axe, bottles and other dangerous weapons, which they used freely on APC members who did not provoke any fight. The thugs took over the court premises and adjoining streets without resistance from the police.

“Their unbridled murderous attacks were captured in different video recordings that are now in circulation,” the statement reads in part.

Tenebe, while alleging that security agencies ignored the impending attack when they were alerted earlier, said his party would be left with no option but self defence in next sitting of the tribunal.

We had alerted the security agencies ahead of yesterday’s attack, but sadly, the police ignored this.

“We are left with no option but to seek self help,” he added.
