Dr. Ibrahim Kabir, the Director-General, Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), has said that the state government had earmarked 5Million naira for fumigation of Bauchi metropolis against malaria.
Kabir made this known in a news conference in Bauchi on Saturday, before the commencement of the fumigation exercise.
The D-G who revealed that the exercise would be a collaboration between the Agency and Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria, (BACATMA), said the decision was sequel to a “one man request” made to the state governor.
“We are here at this moment to go and deliver a mandate given to us by the state governor. On 29th of November last year, the governor went for a condolence visit in one of the communities in Bauchi metropolis.
“He was approached by one old man who told him about the prevalence of mosquitoes in Bauchi metropolis and instantly the governor gave us a directive that we need to prepare to reach out to the entire Bauchi metropolis and fumigate the whole place against malaria vector.
“We are here together with BACATMA to conduct the exercise out of the governor’s kind gesture as a single individual out of over seven million people met and complained to him about an issue and he instantly responded.
“I want to tell you precisely that we are going to fumigate Bauchi metropolis with five million naira only. We have the approval and we have the money with us,” he said.
He further explained that the exercise would soon be extended to all the urban centres and rural areas in the state.
“We are not neglecting the rural areas, we are going to cover the entire state”. He said.
