BREAKING: Abure Escapes Assassination Attempt, House Burnt Down

The Labour Party (LP) says Julius Abure, its national chairman, has escaped an assassination attempt.

Obiora Ifoh, national publicity secretary of the LP, said in a statement that Abure’s Abuja residence was “gutted by a mysterious fire” around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure early this morning allegedly escaped an assassination attempt on him at his Abuja residence,” the statement reads.

His residence was also gutted by a mysterious fire which started a few minutes after 1 a.m. while Abure and the members of his family were asleep.

“According to a member of the family who narrated the incidence, the family was woken up by neighbours and security men living in the compound who raised the alarm.

“The entire family were trapped as the inferno had reached the staircase making it impossible for Abure and family to escape.

“However, it took divine intervention for the national chairman and his family to escape after neighbours and security men gallantly pulled down one of the windows upstairs making ways for the family to escape.

“Men of the Fire Service arrived shortly after Abure and his family were evacuated.”

Ifoh further said Abure and his family were rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

Tragedy As 23-year-old Dies By Self-stabbing In Delta

A 23-year-old man, Mr ThankGod Elufo, has stabbed himself to death behind Nwodo Estate in the Ajaji (Bonsaac) Layout area of Asaba, the Delta State capital.

According to The PUNCH, the incident happened on Sunday after the deceased’s elder brother asked him to dress up for an outing.

An eyewitness told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity that when the incident happened in the night, a call was put across to the vigilante chairman in the layout, Mr Okolo, who visited the scene.

He said, “The incident happened behind Nwodo Estate in Ajaji Layout. They called the vigilante chairman to inform him.

“I went there with the vigilante chairman, Mr Okolo, yesterday (Sunday) night. According to his elder brother who claimed he asked him to dress up for an outing.

“The brother was waiting for him, not knowing that his younger brother had entered the kitchen and stabbed himself.

“So, when we came there, we found his body in the kitchen. The vigilante chairman in the Ajaji Layout called the DPO B Division who sent some officers to the scene around 11 pm. His body was removed by the police to deposit in a morgue.”

He said the young man survived a poisoning by an unknown person last year. Since then, he has been acting funny. Sometimes, he would start shouting that people wanted to kill him but his brothers did not understand.”

When our correspondent contacted the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on Monday, he confirmed the incident.

Police Raid Criminal Hideouts In Delta, Arrest Suspects, Seize Weapons

Assorted guns and sophisticated mobile phones were recovered when operatives of the CP Special Assignment Team of the Delta State Police Command staged a crackdown on suspected kidnappers and one-chance syndicate in some parts of the state.

According to The PUNCH, the operation followed a directive of the state Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, that a case of kidnapping reported at the Isiokolo Police station where one suspect was initially arrested be transferred to operatives of the team alongside one suspect named Augustine Ojanuware.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, Bright Edafe, said in a signed statement made available to journalists in Warri on Monday that “the operatives of the CP-SAT, upon further investigation, said the suspect confessed that he is a member of a kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate terrorising Ughelli, Warri, Agbarho, Sapele and their environs.”

According to the PPRO, “On June 28, 2025, the suspect led operatives to the Osubi area of Warri and Ughelli town, where two additional suspects, viz Precious Urhobowin ‘m’ 27 years of Ewu community in Ughelli North LGA of Delta State and one Julius Okpako, ‘m’, 32 years, a native of Oviri-Ogor community in Ughelli North LGA of Delta State, who is a member and owner of a POS machine used in collecting ransom, were arrested respectively and another locally made gun with eight rounds of live cartridges was recovered from them.”

The police spokesman disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were responsible for the kidnap of a pharmacist on June 19, 2025, in her residence in Ughelli and released after five days upon payment of an undisclosed sum of money and whose Lexus jeep they abandoned along Isiokolo area and also the attempted kidnap of another male victim whose Toyota Corolla they robbed upon the failed attempt at Iyede community on June 28, 2025.

Meanwhile, the suspects are in custody, just as investigations are ongoing in the matter.

The PPRO explained that the operatives arrested some suspected robbers popularly known as “one chance“ and recovered their operational tricycle and 16 sophisticated mobile phones from the gangsters.

The arrest, the police spokesman said, was a sequel to a series of complaints received from members of the public in Ughelli related to a syndicate that specialises in robbing unsuspecting passengers who board commercial tricycles.

The statement partly reads, “Acting on credible intelligence, on June 28, 2025 and June 29, 2025, operatives of CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) led by ASP Julius Robinson stormed Agbarho town and effected the arrest of Lucky Oghenerobor ‘m’ 37yrs, a native of Olomoro community in Isoko South LGA of Delta State, resident in Agbarho town, who is the leader and owner of their operational tricycle.

“Other suspects were also arrested within Ughelli town namely Olamide Fagbaibe ‘m’ 24yrs, a native of Akure in Ondo State and Umeh Akpan ‘m’ 37yrs a native of Eket in Akwa-Ibom State, both resident in Ughelli town.

“Suspects confessed that they usually operate in Ughelli, Warri, Sapele, and environs. Recovered from them are 16 different kinds of suspected stolen phones”.

In the meantime, the State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has reiterated that “the command remains committed to the fight against crime and criminality”.

The CP called on residents and the people of the state to “always volunteer information that will aid the Police in crime fighting”.

Sex Worker Dies After Dispute Over N15,000 Refund In Ondo

A sex worker has lost her life following a violent altercation at a brothel in the Cathedral area of Akure in Ondo State.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

Sources said the dispute began when a male customer demanded a refund of ₦15,000, claiming dissatisfaction with the service after the woman complained of weakness during intercourse.

According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated into a heated verbal and physical confrontation.

Despite the intervention of the brothel manager, the customer left but returned shortly after with a group of men believed to be his associates, attempting to forcibly retrieve the money.

The brothel manager alerted the police, and a patrol team from ‘A’ Division arrived at the scene, arresting three suspects while others fled.

During the incident, the sex worker’s health deteriorated, prompting her transfer to a nearby hospital in Lafe and later to the police hospital in Akure, where she was confirmed dead on arrival.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, said three suspects have been arrested in connection with the death.

Olayinka said efforts were ongoing to arrest two additional suspects still at large.

The names of those involved are being withheld pending further investigation,” he said, adding that the victim’s body had been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Olayinka also noted that Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a detailed probe.

He assured the public that justice would be served and urged anyone with useful information to assist the ongoing investigation.
