Bride’s Alleged Food Poisoning At Wedding Sparks Online Outrage

Social media users have criticised the actions of an unnamed bride over the alleged poisoning of food served to wedding guests in Jigawa State.
The incident, which occurred in the Jahun Local Government Area of the state, was reportedly driven by a personal vendetta, according to eyewitnesses.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Shi’isu Adam, confirmed that an investigation has been launched to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.
He further stated that as a result of the bride’s alleged actions, the groom is currently in critical condition. While all other wedding attendees who consumed the poisoned food have been discharged from the hospital, one person was confirmed dead.

Adam said, “We received a report that the bride had tainted the food served at the wedding reception, leaving the groom critically ill.
“Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged food poisoning incident that occurred during the wedding ceremony in the state.”
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with users expressing varying opinions.
While some suggested the bride’s actions were the result of a forced marriage, others argued that no grievance justified such an act.

One Facebook user, Samuel Alpha, called for the prosecution of anyone found guilty during the investigation.
Alpha wrote, “She should have considered the innocent people attending the wedding. Everyone must not suffer because she was forced to marry the groom or for any other reason. This action must not go unpunished. It’s sheer wickedness.”
Another user, Chukwu Lawrence, condemned the bride’s actions, saying, “The bride is as good as Lucifer. If she was disgruntled about her marriage to the groom, whether due to a forced union or other reasons, she had several ways to express her grievances without resorting to poisoning food meant for a crowd. Anyway, she has already booked an appointment with the police, where the law will take its full course.”
A third user, Cicero Okoro, remarked, “End-time bride. Wickedness. If you don’t want to marry him, just walk away rather than resorting to this act of cruelty.”

Shuaib Sidiali questioned how the bride could have accessed the food unnoticed, asking, “How did she gain access to the food on the wedding day without anyone seeing her? Was she the one preparing the food at her wedding?”
Another user, Lawrence Iweabudike, speculated that the alleged act might have been the result of forced marriage, listing potential consequences such as “emotional trauma, loss of autonomy, increased risk of domestic violence, strained family relationships, and negative impacts on mental and physical health.”
On X, a tweep identified as Ezeugo, tweeting as #Ezeugo_simeon92, commented, “Nawa o… wicked world. That bride get mind.” [sic]
Another tweep, Adewale ‘Damilare, tweeting as #dammygtnet, asked, “Who forced her into getting married? What a thoughtless human.”

Edo NLC Crisis: Caretaker Committee Drags Rival Exco, Govt To Court
The division in the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), took a new dimension on Wednesday as Prof. Monday Monday Lewis Igbafen-led caretaker committee approached the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Benin Judicial Division, seeking to affirm its authority and restrain a rival executive from parading itself as the council’s leadership.
Joined in the suit are the Edo State Government, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.
In a suit marked: NICN/BEN/12/2026, and filed before the court in Benin, the claimant, Igbafen, acting for himself and on behalf of the NLC Caretaker Committee in Edo State, is challenging the continued occupation of the union’s secretariat and control of its assets by members of the Bernard Egwakhide-led factional State Executive Council.

The claimants are asking the court to declare that the caretaker committee (Igbafen-led faction), constituted on August 11, 2025, by the NLC national leadership, remains the only lawful authority to administer the affairs of the Edo State Council pending fresh elections.
They further seek a declaration that the continued occupation of the NLC secretariat located at No. 1 Teboga Road, Benin City, as well as the retention of union assets, financial records, and official instruments by the defendants, is illegal and void.
The suit also prays for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from parading themselves as officials of the NLC Edo Council or interfering with the functions of the caretaker committee.
In addition, the claimants are seeking a mandatory order compelling the defendants to immediately hand over the secretariat, vehicles, financial documents, cheque books, and all other properties belonging to the union.

The claimants further demand N50 million as general and exemplary damages against the defendants for alleged unlawful usurpation of office and acts prejudicial to the administration of the council.
According to court documents made available to our correspondent, the crisis followed the dissolution of the Edo State Council by the NLC National Executive Council on February 27, 2025, over allegations of misconduct, anti-union activities, and constitutional violations.

“We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end.

“This contradiction will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said.
