PDP Alleges Cracks On N4.3bn Bridge Commissioned By Buhari

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State has alleged that most projects executed by the current administration of Governor Babagana Zulum are substandard.

The party particularly pointed out that the much talked about N4.3 billion Customs Flyover commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari, just about a month ago, has started showing cracks.

But reacting, the Borno State Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ali Bukar Dalori, described the allegation as untrue and baseless.

A statement signed by the opposition PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr Amos Adziba, alleged that: “it received with dismay calls and messages from concerned citizens of Borno State expressing their concern for public safety and wastages of public funds on substandard projects by the Borno State Government over the years.

“The calls follow reports of the impending collapse of the just concluded Customs Flyover that gulped over N4.3 billion, which was just commissioned by Mr. President last December, 2021.”

He added that: “It is the responsibility of all citizens, which all our party leadership, members, and all citizens of Borno State to activate vigilance and demand for accountability from Governor Zulum-led administration in the state, because vigilance and demand for good governance remain the price we as citizens must pay to safeguard democracy and public safety.

“Our state has witnessed lots of losses of unquantifiable level over the last one decade and at this stage of recovery, while we still have numerous security challenges to face, we as a state cannot afford to waste such huge public finance on projects that are not well thought of, well designed and well executed within the global best practices standards.

Meanwhile, the ruling APC Chairman, Dalori, advised the factional group of PDP of which Mr Amos Adziba paraded himself as Publicity Secretary to face their court cases filed by the genuine PDP Chairman in the state, Hon Mahdi Baderi, which is still pending.

He noted that there is no need to join issues with a factional opposition party claimed to be PDP leaders, but for the purpose of clarity, the ruling APC under his chairmanship deem it necessary to keep the general public abreast on campaign of calumny against Governor Zulum by Amos Adziba who claimed to be publicly Secretary of Zanna Gadama led -faction of the PDP in Borno state.

Dalori advised “The Factional PDP led by Zanna Gadama as Chairman and Amos Adziba as Publicity Secretary to face their court cases, it is unfortunate that this group have chose to create lies against the committed and transparent execution of people oriented projects under the leadership of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

“Since inception of this present administration, Zulum has executed over 600 projects comprising roads and drainage networks, hospitals, schools which have been attested to be in good standard by notable Engineers, and that is why even the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Engr. Babagana Mohammed, FNSE, while on a state visit to Borno applauded Zulum’s projects after he inspected them recently.”

An Iranian court has sentenced a police chief in northern Iran to death after he was charged with killing a man during mass protests in 2022, local media reported Wednesday.

Local police chief Jafar Javanmardi was arrested in December 2022 over the killing of a protester during the widespread demonstrations sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in custody.

Iranian Kurd Amini, 22, died in custody in September that year following her arrest for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code for women.

Javanmardi was sentenced to death “in accordance with the Islamic law of retribution, known as the ‘qisas’ law, on the charge of premeditated murder”, the lawyer for the victim’s family, Majid Ahmadi, told the reformist Shargh daily.

The protestor, Mehran Samak, 27, succumbed to injuries he sustained after being hit by shotgun pellets during a rally in the northern city of Bandar Anzali on November 30, 2022.

Rights groups based outside of Iran said Samak was shot dead by Iranian security forces after honking his car horn in celebration of Iran’s loss to the United States in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar while at the Amini protest.

The defeat eliminated Iran from the football tournament and drew a mixed response from government supporters and opponents.

The lawyer, Ahmadi, said at the time that the police official was charged with “violating the rules for firearms usage, resulting in the death of Samak”.

In mid-January, the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said the Supreme Court had annulled a death sentence and referred the case to another court.

Gilan province, where Bandar Anzali is located, was a flashpoint of the nationwide protest movement that shook Iran.

It is with heavy heart that I join you today to commit to earth, the remains of our officers and men who died in the course of duty on 14 March 2024 in Okuama Community, Delta State.

The officers and soldiers who lost their lives that day were patriots, brave and noble men who gave their lives to defend and protect our nation against internal and external threats. Their sacrifice will be remembered and honoured for generations to come and their.

On 14 March, Lt. Colonel A. H. Ali, the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion, led three other officers and 13 soldiers to the Okuama Community to mediate in the lingering dispute with Okoloba Community.

They went as peace makers and peace keepers respectfully seeking to bring an end to the hostilities between the two communities.

They were on a mission of peace.

Before the dastardly attack, Lt. Colonel Ali, as the Chief of Army Staff briefed me, enjoyed great operational exploits; fighting terrorists and insurgents in the North East and North West before his deployment to the Niger Delta.

As Commander-In-Chief, I do not take the contributions of members of our Armed Forces for granted. I recognise your valour and bravery. I honour your unflinching commitment to making our country safe from criminals, bandits, kidnappers and insurrectionists.

While we continue to grieve for the courageous men we lost that day, let us also, on this solemn occasion, be reminded of the unfinished business of working for peace and harmony in our communities.

We must begin to rebuild our communities and make them into places where love, tolerance and harmony will reign. Leaders at all levels especially community leaders and traditional rulers must work to strengthen the bonds that unite us. We must endthe cycle of violence and bloodletting.

I want to make it clear, once more, that those who committed this heinous crime will not go unpunished. We will find them and our departed heroes will get justice.

The elders and chiefs of Okuoma also have a duty to help the military in fishing out the gunmen who committed the barbaric crime against our men.

I wish to also commend our Armed Forces for their restraint in choosing not to carry out any reprisal attacks in Okuoma or its neighbouring communities. We must all ensure that the innocent people of Okuoma are not made to bear the punishment of the guilty and wicked among them.

To the entire armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I have a message for you: Do not let the death of your compatriots discourage you. There is no higher honour than the vocation you have chosen to pursue. We cherish you. We cherish your labour of love. We salute your daily sacrifice in protecting your fellow citizens from danger. We acknowledge your sacrifices to defend our nation.

Within our continent, our sub-region and across the world, the Nigerian Military has remained a force for good, embodying a great example and keeping our democracy safe.

The Military must, within the next ninety days, ensure that all the benefits of the departed are paid to their families.
