Court Invasion: Bayelsa Police Arrest Two Suspects As NBA Condemns Violence

The Bayelsa State Police Command has said two suspects are in custody following their arrest in connection with the invasion of the state High Court on Wednesday.

Some hoodlums believed to be political thugs had disrupted a hearing by the court presided over by Justice Nayai Aganaba in a case on the controversial ward, local government, and state congresses of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

A statement on Friday by a spokesperson for the state police command, Asinim Butswat, identified the suspects as Promise Ogilogi and Azibabin Adiki.

The statement read, “The Bayelsa State Police Command has remanded two suspects in prison custody for their involvement in the invasion of the Bayelsa State High Court and attack on High Court judge. The suspects, Promise Ogilogi, ‘m’ and Azibabin Adiki, ‘m’, were arrested on 13 April 2022.

“The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Ben Nebolisa Okolo, fdc, has charged police operatives to arrest the fleeing suspects, and warn unequivocally that the command is poised to deal decisively with anyone or group of persons who hide under any guise to disrupt the existing peace in the state.

“The command, hereby, assures members of the public, particularly the judiciary, that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and sanctity of the courtroom and to forestall future occurrence.”

Meanwhile, the Yenagoa and Sagbama branches of the Nigerian Bar Association have condemned the violent disruption of proceedings by the hoodlums inside the court of Justice Aganaba.

In a joint statement on Friday, the chairman of Yenagoa NBA, Ukumbiriowei Saiyou, and his Sagbama branch counterpart, Ebinyu Aderigha, described the court invasion as provocative and disheartening.

They said it was worrisome to imagine that the perpetrators of the violence could invade and desecrate the sanctity of the court while the court was in session.

Saiyou and Aderigha said the judiciary was the last hope of the common man, adding that the show of shame that culminated in the affront on the rule of law deserved the highest condemnation.

The statement said, “The executives and entire members of the Yenagoa and Sagbama branches of the NBA hereby do condemn in its entirety the unprovoked and unwarranted invasion of Court 3 of the Bayelsa State High Court presided over by Hon. Justice N. Aganaba yesterday, the 13th day of April 2022 while the court was in session over an All Progressive Congress dispute.

“The NBA whose motto is “Promoting the Rule of Law” will neither stand by and watch nor tolerate such high-level sort of macabre dance perpetrated by litigants and their supporters who feel the decision of the court in one way or the other may not be in their favour.

“The NBA Yenagoa and Sagbama Branches do hereby state unequivocally that it will do all within its powers to ensure that the culprits are brought to book. This includes any errant member of the Bar discovered to have masterminded or to have been part of this unholy alliance to desecrate the court. The NBA will not hesitate to commence disciplinary proceedings against such errant members.

“We, therefore, call on the relevant security agencies particularly the Police to launch an immediate thorough investigation and fish out the perpetrators of this unwarranted invasion, with an intention to make them face the wrath of the law as soon as possible.

“We are happy that some suspects have already been apprehended and we hope they will aid the investigation of this unholy act. The NBA will surely follow up the prosecution of this case to its logical conclusion.”

The Bauchi state Commissioner for Education, Dr Jamila Dahiru, on Thursday, gave a cash gift of N5,000 each to three Senior Secondary II students of Government Science Secondary School, Misau for their determination to succeed in Education.

Two of the students, Adamu Adamu, Mustapha and Haruna impressed the commissioner for their presence in school in the first day of resumption while Abdullahi Musa marvelled her for his reading ability and comprehension.

According to the commissioner, the gesture was to appreciate their determination to learn as well and motivate other students to emulate them.

While paying a courtesy visit to the Emir of Misau, Alh. Ahmed Sulaiman, the commissioner disclosed that the Bauchi State government was working with stakeholders from the Misau Emirate to fine-tune modalities of temporarily accommodating the students of Federal Science Technical College, Misau at its Science Secondary School Misau.

She said the college made the request in a letter to the ministry stating that the facility given to them could no longer accommodate their students population, hence the resolve to convene the stakeholders meeting to fine-tune ways of sharing the facility for the betterment of the state.

She disclosed that government science secondary school Misau, one of the best in the state in terms of befitting facilities has the capacity to accommodate up to five thousand students, but currently houses about three hundred students.

She appreciated the Emir for his continued support to programmes and policies of the government with more emphasis on the education sector.

Speaking on behalf of the Emir and other stakeholders, a retired Director with the Ministry, Muhammad Musa, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for the honour and promised to assemble critical stakeholders from the emirate so as to arrive at an acceptable decision for the benefit of all and sundry.

NDIC Obtains Order To Wind Down 96 Microfinance, Mortgage Banks

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has said that it has obtained Winding up Orders for 96 out of 183 microfinance and primary mortgage banks whose licenses were revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria in May 2023.

The Managing Director, NDIC, Bello Hassa, revealed this at a sensitisation seminar for Judges of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday organised by the NDIC, to enlighten the judiciary on the intricacies of the banking industry.

Hassan said, “As at date, the Corporation had obtained Winding up Orders for 96 out of 183 Micro Finance and Primary Mortgage Banks whose licenses were revoked by the CBN in May 2023, in less than one Year of revocation.”

He added that the NDIC was committed to fulfilling its mandate of protecting depositors through bank supervision, failure resolution and liquidation so as to boost confidence in the financial system.

Speaking on the role that the judiciary plays in the fulfillment of the mandate, Hassan said, “We recognise the judiciary as one of our critical stakeholders. With this, when cases are brought before them, they can receive accelerated hearing and proclamation of Justice.”

Citing some of the achievements from previous editions of the seminar, Hassan said that instances where liquidation-related litigations experienced delays were reduced.

Speakers of the 36 Houses of Assembly in Nigeria on Thursday expressed support for the National Assembly’s ongoing efforts to alter the 1999 constitution to create state policing in the country.
