Court Sacks Ogun Monarch, Warns Govt Against Impunity

Published

on

The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta on Tuesday nullified the installation of Alexander Macgregor as the Olu of Ilawo, declaring the process illegal and ordering him to cease parading himself as the monarch.

Justice Olatokunbo Majekodunmi, who delivered the ruling, condemned the Ogun State Government for proceeding with Macgregor’s installation despite pending court cases, describing the act as a blatant disregard for judicial authority.

The court’s decision followed a suit filed by the Ogunsanya-Ariku Royal Family of Ilawo, which contested the nomination process that led to Macgregor’s installation.

The family alleged irregularities in the selection process, claiming that traditional warrant chiefs approved by the Ilawo council of chiefs were substituted with unfamiliar names to manipulate the outcome.

Justice Majekodunmi emphasised the legal duty of all parties to respect the court’s authority, stating, “It is an impunity and disregard to this court for the defendant to go ahead with the installation of the 7th defendant (Macgregor) despite the pending court case. Once a case is ongoing, no action should be taken that undermines the integrity of the court.”

The court issued a mandatory injunction ordering the withdrawal of all instruments of office, including the staff of office and other symbols of authority, from Macgregor.

Additionally, the judge restored the stool of the Olu of Orile Ilawo to its status quo pending the determination of the suit.

Reacting to the ruling, Secretary to the Ogunsanya-Ariku dynasty, Dr. David Ogunsanya, commended the judiciary for upholding justice.

He described the nullification of Macgregor’s installation as a victory for the rule of law.

Today, we are elated to inform the public that the installation of Mr. Olusegun Macgregor has been nullified by a competent court of law, with instructions that he should henceforth desist from parading himself as the Olu of Orile Ilawo,” Ogunsanya said.

Any action contrary to this ruling would amount to contempt of court and will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

The Ogunsanya-Ariku family initially approached the court after the death of the previous Olu of Ilawo on December 24, 2021, citing manipulation and irregularities in the nomination process. The ruling reaffirms the court’s position on upholding traditional and legal processes against impunity.
