Mrs Ifeoma Ndukwu, the Transition Committee (TC) Chairperson, Orlu Local Government Area, Imo, has distributed food items and hand sanitisers to rural communities in the council.
Ndukwu, who addressed newsmen while distributing the palliatives on Friday, said that the measure was to support the state government to fight and prevent COVID-19, and to also cushion the effects on people in rural communities.
“A committee has recently been inaugurated at the council headquarters with the mandate of sensitising people in the rural communities on prevention of the Coronavirus, and to also distribute food items to cushion hunger.
“The committee has started discharging its mandate.
“I wish to remind the people to obey government’s directives so as to stay healthy at all times, because there is no alternative to heathy living,’’ she said.
The Orlu council boss praised the efforts of Gov. Hope Uzodimma, other government functionaries, individuals, corporate organisations, religious bodies and sundry supporters in fighting the pandemic in Imo.
She urged all well-meaning Imo people, including the banks and other financial institutions to join government in the fight against Coronavirus.
“I, therefore, enjoin Imo people to obey government’s directives to stay safe against Coronavirus by maintaining social distancing, regular hand washing or sanitising, staying indoors and shunning large gatherings,’’ Ndukwu said.
The benefited communities include Umuna, Eziachi, Okporo and Umuowa among others.
