Edo State Association of Dead has urged authorities concerned to bring to justice the killers of one of them – Mr. Efe Ogbeide.
The association also urged the Edo government to provide scholarships for his three children up to university level, and an automatic employment to his widow to support the family.
Addressing newsmen during a peaceful protest to the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State council on Monday, president of the association, Kingsley Eromosele, said Ogbeide went to Obazagbon community to supervise a construction site during which “he was gunned down by trigger-happy, criminal-minded individuals over a land dispute.”

Eromosele, while lamenting the manner deaf persons are “murdered in cold blood by those who act with impunity,” decried the manner at which “deaf persons are oppressed, ignored, excluded, and discriminated against.”
He said: “This is not the first time a Deaf person has been murdered in cold blood by those who act with impunity.
“His death echoes the tragic losses of the late Johnbull and other Deaf individuals who have been murdered in similar circumstances.”
Eromosele, who urged the government to address “inaccessibility of critical information for the deaf, which contributed to Mr. Ogbeide walking unknowingly into danger,” appealed to “media houses and public institutions in Edo State to make information accessible to the deaf by enlisting sign language interpreters.”
He further demanded “employment opportunities for the deaf in government institutions, regardless of their educational qualifications,” stressing that “If Mr. Ogbeide had been gainfully employed in a government establishment, he might not have been in that situation in the first place.”
The association president who lamented that “our right to own and acquire property, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, is being denied,”
further lamented that “when Deaf individuals purchase land, others forcibly take it from them.”
He added: “Mr. Nelson Okojie lost his land, and Efe Ogbeide was murdered on land owned by a Deaf man. Many of us face the risk of retiring without a home of our own.
“The violence must stop. The government and the Edo State House of Assembly must enact and enforce laws that protect the rights and safety of the Deaf community.”
