Delta: Police Officer Arrested Over Shooting Incident

Published

on

The Delta State Police Command has condemned in strong terms the unprofessional conduct of a police officer caught on video shooting at a moving vehicle in Asaba, describing the act as “reckless, unjustified, and contrary to the ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.”

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, confirmed that the officer involved in the viral incident has been identified, summoned, and detained at the command headquarters.

Edafe said, “After a careful examination of the video clip, it is clear that the policeman acted in an unprofessional manner, unbecoming of a police officer. The command condemns his act in totality, as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237.”

He stated that preliminary findings revealed the officer was responding to a hit-and-run incident, but stressed that this did not justify his use of a firearm.

“No policeman is allowed to use his firearm without proper justification, as stipulated in Force Order 237,” Bright reiterated.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Abaniwonda, had reportedly ordered immediate internal disciplinary action against the erring officer, assuring that the matter would be handled in strict accordance with the Police Act and regulations.

Public reaction to the viral clip has been one of outrage, with civil society groups and rights advocates calling for transparency in the disciplinary process and demanding that the Nigeria Police Force adopt stronger accountability measures against the misuse of firearms.

Bright Edafe, however, urged members of the public to remain calm and report any case of police abuse or unprofessional conduct for prompt action.

Recently, the command intercepted a large cache of live ammunition allegedly destined for Edo State, and separately arrested a notorious drug dealer operating within the Warri axis.

Edafe told The Guardian on Sunday that operatives of the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Ogbe Emmanuel, made the interception on 16 October 2025, at about 12:00 p.m. during a routine surveillance and stop-and-search operation at the Head Bridge, Asaba.

According to him, the team reportedly flagged down a Toyota Hiace Hummer Bus with registration number NGK 16 XB, driven by one Ozoemenam Sylvanus.

The driver’s suspicious behaviour prompted officers to conduct a detailed search of the vehicle — a decision that paid off when 400 live cartridges were discovered concealed within the bus.
