EditorThe Initiative for Advancement of the Albinism Cause (INAAC), has called on governments at all levels to prioritize the welfare of persons with albinism in the country.
Miss Joy Odigie, Founder of INAAC, a Non Governmental Organisation, stated this in a Democracy Day Message made available to journalists in Benin on Wednesday.
Odigie said that as the country celebrates its Democracy Day, the government must demonstrate its dedication to a nation where everyone could live with dignity and purpose.
She regretted that persons with albinism in the country have continued to suffer discrimination, lack of access to inclusive education and affordable eyes and skin care services and products.

She urged the government to take concrete steps to protect and empower persons with albinism, noting that such actions could transform the ideals of democracy into tangible benefits for all.
“The government should ensure that persons with albinism are protected from discrimination and violence, guaranteeing their rights to education, healthcare, and employment without prejudice.
“In a democracy, every voice matters and every individual has the right to live free from discrimination and stigma.
“Persons with albinism, like all Nigerians, deserve equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to our society.
“The government should champion inclusive education and public awareness campaigns to foster understanding and respect for persons with albinism.

“It should invest in inclusive education, providing support such as free eye checks, magnifying glasses and telescopic lens for students with albinism
“Healthcare access is another critical area. Persons with albinism require specialized services like dermatological care, vision support, and sun protection products.
“The government should establish programmes providing these essential services to reduce the burden of skin cancers among Persons with Albinism.
She added that government at all levels should create initiatives like vocational training, micro-loans, and job placement services tailored to the needs of persons with albinism.
