Deputy Gov Promises Effective, Efficient Healthcare Services In Edo

Deputy governor of Edo State, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, has promised effective healthcare service delivery to people at the grassroots through Primary Health Centres (PHCs).

The deputy governor made the promise in Benin on Friday during an inaugural meeting with the taskforce of PHCs and other stakeholders.

Idahosa said the aim of the meeting was to enable the government identify grey areas and build traction for effective service delivery.

In a statement made available to INFO DAILY by Friday Aghedo, the Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Idahosa was said to have noted that in line with the SHINE Agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government would give affordable and qualitative healthcare services for all, especially vulnerable people.

The deputy governor, while presiding over the inaugural meeting, pointed out that the government was in position to cut down on morbidity, boost maternal and child health, as well as ensure the overall well-being of Edo residents.

Idahosa noted that people at the grassroots need to be provided with adequate healthcare to minimize their referrals to secondary healthcare centres based on the fact that time is key on issues which relate to health.

He said: “The mandate of Governor Monday Okpebholo is clear as he is poised to enhancing primary healthcare service delivery in Edo State by ensuring accessibility, accountability, quality, and efficiency of healthcare at all levels.

“This gathering represents a pivotal step in our collective mission to strengthen the PHCs system in our state and improve healthcare outcomes for all.”

He maintained that PHC is the foundation of an efficient and sustainable health system.

Idahosa described PHC as the first point of access for the citizens, the cornerstone of preventive care, and a crucial determinant of overall public health.

He added that without a robust PHC system, communities remain vulnerable to preventable diseases, maternal and child health challenges, and other pressing healthcare concerns.

While pointing out the assigned roles of members of the Taskforce who are to operate under the “One roof” programme, Idahosa told them to channel their energies towards achieving results.

He encouraged all stakeholders to put all hands on deck to foster a multi-sectoral approach that harnesses the expertise and commitment of all stakeholders.

“I am encouraging the Local government chairmen to take an active role in prioritizing PHC within their jurisdictions as they hold the responsibility to ensure functional health facilities, and proper resource allocation for sustainable healthcare improvements.

“I am also soliciting for the collaboration, resource-sharing, and collective problem-solving by stakeholders to support the administration of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, as he works to fortify primary healthcare in Edo State.

“The government is poised to strengthen immunization programmes, improve maternal and child health care services, and ensure the provision of essential medical resources across all local government areas.”

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole who highlighted the perspective of the Health Ministry in his speech, stated that to achieve close universal health coverage, the state through his ministry has carried out a digitization training on the district health information system for 146 medical record officers/facility managers.

According to him, the ministry has also conducted training for data officers to improve monitoring and evaluation to strengthen PHC, procured and distributed 210 laptops and tablets to PHCs across the 18 councils to direct facility reporting and policy tilt of government.

Members of the Taskforce cut across the Ministries of Health, Communication and Orientation, Education, Local Government Commission, the 18 Local Government Areas of the state, and the Edo State PHC Development Agency.

Others included faith-based organizations in addition with development partners drawn from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

Children’s Day: Chaos At Ogbe Stadium As Dozens Faint

Chaos erupted on Wednesday during the Children’s Day celebration as dozens of students reportedly collapsed following a stampede triggered by the use of pepper spray.

The event,
organised by the Edo State Ministry of Education at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium was disrupted after some male students of Ihogbe College allegedly made uncompromising advances towards female students at the venue.

‎ A parent who identified himself as Oboh Emmanuel said, “the behaviour of those uncultured students attracted the attention of bouncers stationed at the stadium as they rebuked the male students.”

‎Oboh said the affected students later regrouped and attacked the bouncers, leading to a confrontation within the crowded arena.

It was gathered that in the ensuing confusion, the bouncers were reported to have deployed pepper spray in an area occupied by a large number of students.

‎Several students, particularly female students, reportedly fainted after inhaling the substance, while others sustained injuries after being stepped on during the ensuing melee.

‎The panic was said to have spread across the stadium as students, teachers and parents scampered for safety.

‎Many of the affected students were reportedly rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr Patrick Ebojele, said the security personnel that fired the tear gas had been detained.

He said all the students, except two, that were rushed to the hospital have been discharged.

Ebojele stated that doctors wanted to observe the students till tomorrow before allowing them to go home.

The two students are not seriously injured. Doctors want to observe them overnight. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education is still at the hospital. The man who used pepper spray has been detained.

“The incident did not happen the way it is being exaggerated. All modalities were put in place to ensure the children enjoyed their day.”

Okpebholo Salutes Edo Muslims, Seeks Continued Support, Prayers

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has urged Muslims and all Nigerians to continue to pray for peace, unity and progress in the country even as they celebrate the annual Eid-al-Adha

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, stated this during the annual Eid-al-Adha celebration with Muslim faithfuls held at Government House in Benin City.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to fairness, inclusivity and equal opportunities for all citizens irrespective of religion and tribe.

Okpebholo appreciated the Muslim community in Edo State for their unwavering support and continuous prayers for his administration, noting that such prayers and support have contributed immensely to the peace and steady development being witnessed across the state.

In his remarks, the Chief Imam of Edo State, Abdulfatai Enabulele, applauded the governor for what he described as remarkable developmental strides recorded in less than two years in office.

The cleric commended the administration for ongoing infrastructural development and efforts geared towards improving governance in the state, but appealed to the government to revisit and complete some abandoned projects inherited from the previous administration for the benefit of the people.
