All Progressive Congress (APC) youth leaders in Ewu, Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, have reportedly escaped death as they were attacked by thugs allegedly hired by some politicians while they were pasting posters of the APC governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, in the community in preparation for the party’s ward to ward rally.
This attack is coming few days after His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II summoned politicians from the two major parties and appealed to them to stop attacking themselves.
Leader of Ewu youth APC Campaign Council, and former Special Adviser to the Council Chairman, Hon Clement Inegben, disclosed that around 8PM on Friday, he was summoned to appear at Ewu Police Station only to be attacked as he got to the Station.
Another youth, simply identified as Aguni, said they were installing mini billboards when they were attacked by thugs suspected to be loyalists of their opponent.
According to him, it took good spirited people to rescue them from the attackers.
Meanwhile, reacting to the development, Ize-Iyamu enjoined the youths to maintain their peaceful disposition, which they had adopted from the beginning of the campaign.
He, however, expressed disappointment that after the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, had extracted commitment from leaders of all political groups and other stakeholders to maintain peace throughout the period of the election, some persons still stuck to the use of violence.
Other APC Leaders in Ewu, including a former Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon David Iyoha and a former commissioner, Hon Larry Aghedo, prevailed on the youths to stick nobly to peace and tranquillity.
