The Edo Government has created a new department of Animal Husbandry Services in the state ministry Agriculture and Natural Resources for effective service delivery in the state.
Gov. Godwin Obaseki said during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Institute for Animal Science (NIAS) in Benin that the new department would ensure proper management of animals in the state.
Obaseki who was represented by Mr Peter Aikhuomobhogbe, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources during courtesy visit, noted that the department would also help in the formulation of animal husbandry policies and provide quality breeding services to enhance productivity.
‘“The department would focus on modern, efficient and more humane ways to care for animals,” he said.

The National President, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science ( NIAS), Professor Baba Yusuf-Abubakar congratulated the governor for the creation of the new department.
Represented by the First Vice President of the institute, Chief Simon Ohwofa, Yusuf-Abubakar said the courtesy visit was to thank the governor for creating the new department of animal husbandry services.
Yusuf-Abubakar noted that the department would ensure proper management and regulation of livestock production in the state.
“We are very hopeful that this department will add tremendous value to the service delivery by the government to the people especially in the area of animal husbandry.
” We also say a big thank you Mr governor, for approving an office accommodation in the ministry for the Institute’s new Zonal office.
“This has enabled the zone, which was created this year to take off successfully and to oversee the Institute’s activities in Edo, Delta and Bayelsa,” he said.
The president, however, appealed to the governor to provide an operational vehicle and adequate funding for the new department.
He added that an operational vehicle and funds would enhance the performance of the department
He pledged the institute’s and the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN) unalloyed support to the state government.
According to him, the Institute through its department of training and Internship is ready to partner with state government.
“In the area of youth training, empowerment and participation in agricultural enterprise and agribusiness in the livestock value chain.
“This is the surest way to channel the abundant youth energy for economic gains and sustainability.

“The Institute is also open to further talks with the Edo State government on this and other areas of common interest for the benefit of Edo people,” he added.
Yusuf-Abubakar commended the state governor for his various agricultural programmes adding that, the programmes had helped mitigate the adverse impact of COVID-19 crisis on the economy.
The director of the new department, Mr Eno Otamere conducted members of the institute round the new animal husbandry service department.
