Edo: Men Not Seeking Our Hands In Marriage, Physically Challenged Women Lament

Published

on

The Chairperson of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Edo State chapter, Ms Ann Ujugo has lamented that marital discrimination is what women living with disabilities in Nigeria suffer.

She said men do not ask for their hands in marriage, leaving them single all through their lives.

Ojugo made the assertion in Benin City, Edo State on Tuesday at a press briefing to commemorate the International Women Day marked on the 8th of March every year.

She said other challenges include lack of job opportunities, discrimination in schools and in market places.

According to her: “One of the most difficult challenge women with disabilities face is marital discrimination as no man, even men with disabilities don’t come to ask for our hands in marriage.

“Some will even ask if you fell like a woman. For a woman with disability, emotional discrimination is a double tragedy for us. Another one is education, some people don’t like sending their daughters to school, not to talk about when the person has disabilities,” She said.

Earlier, in her speech, Miss Janet Omole, a member of JONAPWD, said the International Women Day stands out as a remarkable day for them because it is a day they choose as women and girls with disabilities to add their voices to that of millions of Nigerian women and also to appreciate the place of women within the global community.

“The biggest emphases around women’s rights in the last few decades has been gender equality in schools, workplaces, and other areas, which is highlighted
in goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, today in Nigeria society, underrepresentation, unbalanced education, pervasive social norms,
employment discrimination, and physical or sexual violence are some of the biggest challenges women and girls still face.

“And women with disabilities face a double incidence of these challenges described above worsened by the social and cultural viewpoints of the society towards persons with disabilities and disability related issues.

“Women and girls with disabilities continue to suffer social and
cultural discrimination amidst other structural and technical barriers placed on them by the society. Efforts by successive governments to tackle some of these
challenges through the enactment ot justifiable laws like the Child Rights Law has not been very effective as a result of poor implementation.

“It is as a result of this that we as women, are clamoring for inclusion and representation in government so that we can be part of decision making process in matters that effect us and the general development of the country.

“We therefore use this medium to add our voices to the calls by many, on the male dominated National Assembly to, as a matter of good conscience, recall and pass the five gender based related bill earlier turned down by the legislature at the ongoing Constitutional Amendment Exercise.

“As overlooking the opinion of so large a constituency can hinder the proper growth and development of the country,” She said.

Far-famed Osogbo-based Ifa priest, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, on Tuesday, demanded recognition for African Traditional Religion, saying such official recognition from the government has been long overdue.

Elebuibon spoke in Osogbo at the official unveiling of an N200 million Idin Ileke Temple, a place of worship by traditionalists in the Atelewo Area of Osogbo.

The edifice, which is to serve as a place of weekly worship and other ceremonies for the adherents of different deities, has a hall with solar panels and designated places for placing atonement.

The adherents are to meet at the hall on Saturdays for service.

Elebuibon said ATR remains the most enduring, a uniting cord binding Africans together long before the advent of religion on other continents of the world.

He said, “The Federal Government must recognise that the African Traditional Religion is our only means of cultural identity. Besides, if it is properly recognised, it can generate revenue in billions of dollars for the country’s economy.

“We spent about N200m on this project and the construction work was completed within 22 months.”

Speaking on the temple’s significance, he said, “This project is significant. With this kind of place of worship, we won’t lose more members to Western religion. It is important for us to have a place where we can worship Olodumare. It will keep our members together. We have our worship on Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm.”

The PUNCH had reported that Elebuibon urged Kwara Muslims and Isese devotees to allow peace reign in the case involving activist Adegbola Abdulazeez, a.k.a. Tani Olohun.

Abdulazeez was arrested on August 16 in Ibadan and transferred to the Kwara State Police Command for allegedly insulting the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and some prominent Muslim clerics.

Reacting to the judgment, the claimant, Opumie, said he was satisfied with the judgment as his right was trampled upon, and he was denied medical attention during the period of his incarceration.

I am happy even when all our expectations were not met. I thank all those who stood by me, the traditional rulers and my lawyer, for standing for the truth”.

In his statement of claims, he had accused the DSS in Yenagoa of allegedly abducting him at the instance of NAOC in Gestapo style, physically and mentally torturing him, tying up and throwing him into the boot of a vehicle, and taking him to Abuja like a common criminal without the knowledge of his family and access to medical care.
