Edo: NGO Advocates Accessible, Affordable Education For Every Child Irrespective Of Disabilities

The Network For the Advancement of Persons With Visible Disabilities (NAPVID), Tuesday, said education, as a right, should be made available, accessible, and affordable to every child irrespective of his or her physical disabilities.
The Executive Director of NAPVID, Bar. Melody Omosah, made the assertion in Benin City, Edo State capital while giving his opening remarks In a 3-day workshop organized by the organization to develop a Disability Centred Inclusive Education and Strategic Road Map for Edo State.
He said as specified by the United Nations Convention on Right of Persons with Disabilities, Article 24 which stated that,
children with disabilities should be able to participate in the general education system and should not be discriminated against, there was need to move from special to inclusive education.
According to to him, “It is important that as specified by the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Article 24 and Sustainable Development Goal, number 4 which state that every child has the right to affordable and accessible education no matter their disabilities.
“It is time we move from special education to inclusive education. There is a need for a disability-centered inclusive education. We should make education accessible, available, and affordable to every child irrespective of his disabilities or location, as education is a right.
“So, because we have an administration in the state that has chosen to do things right, we have gone into partnership and over a year now, NAPVID entered into a partnership with the state government. I also want to say that the Persons with Disability Bill that has been sent to the State House of Assembly when passed into law will assist in making inclusive education available for persons with disabilities.”

She said most of children who fall into this category always aspire for high education, adding that it is when there is inclusive education that such child will be able to achieve his or her desired dreams.
“It is when we capture children with disabilities with a purposeful education that we can rightful say that they are prepared for higher education in life. But when this approach is lacking, it will be difficult for them to fulfil this aspect of education,” She said.
Participants were drawn from teachers in special schools in Edo State and lecturers from Federal College of Education, (Special ) Oyo State.

“We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end.
“This will include major corporations such as MTN Group and MultiChoice Group. It is morally indefensible for businesses to thrive in an environment where the lives of Nigerians are protected, while Nigerians are subjected to fear and violence elsewhere.
“This contradiction will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said.
