…Constitution Allows Freedom Of Association-Ex-Commissioner

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Mr. Osagbovo Iyoha, Tuesday, January 28, said the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, flaunted the law by organising the political rally held in Edo North Senatorial District by a faction of the party last weekend.

Osagbovo who disclosed this while reacting to the political rally held by Oshiomole’s faction, noted that
the National Chairman can’t resolve the crisis rocking the party in the state, adding that, by organising the rally, “Oshiomhole unleashed terror on the people of the state.”

Osagbovo who is the Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on political matters, stressed that ban on political rally by the state government and the Inspector-General of Police in the state has not been lifted.

“Oshiomhole is doing this because he knows that Obaseki is a gentleman and law-abiding. We know what happened when he was the governor, where those who held political meetings without consulting him were beaten up and their property destroyed.

“The crisis in APC continue because the man (Oshiomhole), who should be the  arbiter is an interested party in the crisis. It is not hidden, we are all aware that he is the person sponsoring the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM) that started the crisis. It is unfortunate that the man who supposed to uphold the constitution of the party is the one causing problem in the party”, he said.

Continuing, he stressed, “We want to let the suspended national chairman know that if he breaks the law and hold rally in Edo North, he can’t do so in Edo South because we will not allow that. We had a national chairman from Edo when he was the state governor and nothing of such happened and he would not have allow that.”

While noting that they are opened to reconcilation, he disclosed that the situation whereby the author (Oshiomole) of the crisis is the one hand picking his loyalists who want to take over the State Assembly as reconcilation committee is what they are opposed to.

He said when the problem started, they approached the national chairman to intimate him on the activities of the EPM and to caution them, saying that he never cautioned them because he is the one sponsoring them.

He described the allegation that the governor is begging party leaders for second term as false, saying that the governor is controlling the organs of the party.

His reaction to Osagbovo, a former Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Abdul Oroh, said the constitution was clear about freedom of association which include the right to hold rally.

“Obaseki cannot stop opposition to his re-election through violence. Obaseki should restore to the path of peace and reconciliation. He should make peace with leaders of the party and respect that other party members have the right to express their view.

“They cannot say Oshiomhole has been suspended. We know how to suspend a member of the party. The constitution of the party is clear and Oshiomhole has been presiding over the affairs of the party,” he said.

Edo State Commissioner for Physical Planning, Housing, Urban and Regional Development, Isoken Omo, who addressed a joint press conference with her counterpart in the Ministry of Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, said that the reason for the new city, which she said started September 2022, was to reduce the pressure on the Benin City Centre.
