Edo Poll: Aspirant Faults APC Screening Committee’s Report

The All Progressives Congress governorship aspirant in Edo State, Hon. Anamero Dekeri, has described the APC Pruning Committee’s report as lacking in merit.

The Independent National Electoral Commission fixed September 21, 2024, for the Edo State governorship election. The APC slated the primary where its candidate would emerge for February 17, 2024.

The APC had set up a committee as an internal mechanism to screen and prune down the number of aspirants to a manageable level to ensure a rancor-free primary election.

Consequently, the committee pruned the number of aspirants from 29 to 10, and subsequently to six, with two aspirants from each of the three senatorial districts. It further pruned the list to four with two each from Edo Central and Edo South senatorial districts, screening out those from Edo North senatorial district.

Reacting, Dekeri, a member representing the Etsako federal constituency in the House of Representatives, on Monday in Abuja said he was determined to seek the APC ticket in the Edo 2024 Governorship race.

He declared that the race for the APC ticket in Edo state should be a vigorous competition of ideas, values, and leadership qualities.

He stated, “It is important to inform all and sundry that the committee formed was an internal arrangement by the state leaders of our party to help the party and the aspirants conserve resources to properly prosecute the primary election to avoid going into the main election divided, as that may cause grievances by those who may come short of winning the primaries.

“It was resolved and agreed that the committee has to be fair to all aspirants, and as stated in its terms of reference, their role is only advisory. As expected, all aspirants subjected themselves to the screening in accordance with the terms of reference of the committee.

“However, the report presented by the committee totally betrayed the true performance of the aspirants and lacked merit, which was observed even by the State Party leaders who set up the committee. They were proposing an appeal committee to right the wrong before the attention of the house was drawn to the fact that the National Working Committee of our great Party, APC has clarified that the appropriate organ that has the locus standi to screen aspirants after they procure and submit the expression and nomination forms in accordance with Section 84 of the Electoral Act as amended.

“I wish to use this opportunity to thank my teeming supporters and party faithful for their unwavering support for my aspiration as the leading aspirant. In expressing my dissent, I will not waver in my determination and resolve to vie for the APC ticket in the Edo 2024 Governorship race.

“I firmly believe that the goodwill from my beloved Edo people, my experience with the downtrodden and the ordinary Edo person, my dedication, competences, and track record make me the candidate to beat and the best option for the APC to secure victory in the upcoming election.”

Dekeri urged the APC leadership to uphold the essence of democracy and give every qualified aspirant an equal opportunity.

Edo APC Primary: Those Faulting Uzodinma’s Announcement Are Myopic, Party Chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Dr. Washington Osifo, has described as myopic those faulting the announcement made by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State on the party governorship primary held last Saturday in the state.

Governor Uzodinma who was the Chairman of the Edo APC governorship primary held on Saturday February 17, had announced Hon. Dennis Idahosa as winner of the primary, an act that has attracted controversy and debate in the state polity, as some have argued that only the returning officer is constitutionally empowered to announce the winner of the election and not the chairman.

But addressing newsmen at the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Edo State council, on the outcome of the primary and its consequent controversy, Osifo said the same announcement being faulted by some persons was made four years ago by this same Uzodinma.

The former governorship aspirant who noted that the APC national headquarters will not accept any result announced by anyone not designated to do so, added that the “governorship primary election result has been received and accepted by the National Headquarters. It is a settled matter.”

He added: “At the end of the election, the committee charged with the responsibility of organizing the election, led by the Chairman, HE, Hope Uzodima, Governor of IMO State announced Hon. Dennis Idahosa as the winner and flag bearer of the party in the forthcoming election.

“The argument about who has the responsibility to announce result is clearly myopic and casuistic. Only four years ago, the same Governor Hope Uzodima played exactly the same role in 2019, and no one raised any questions. Similar committees have been constituted to conduct primaries across the country where the Chairmen announced results. “

Osifo who said the governorship primary was not flawed as painted in some quarters, called on party members “to maintain sanity.”

“The exercise of Saturday, 17th February, 2023, was not so flawed as painted, and no major party has the capacity to conduct a free and fair primary election without leadership interference. That is integral to the party system, whose main focus is how to present a candidate who is well entrenched in the party and could muster the political muscle to win the election.

“My call to all persons at this moment is to let sanity prevail and let us be frank with each other. The party whose flag all of us sought to fly has the sole responsibility to nominate her flag bearer by whatever democratic mode she chooses,” he added.

Edo APC Primary: Our Party May End Up Not Fielding Guber Candidate, Concerned Stakeholders Express Fear

Some members of a group, Concerned All Progressives Congress Stakeholders in Edo State on Monday expressed fear that the party risks losing the forthcoming September governorship election if the duly elected and announced winner of last Saturday’s primary, Senator Monday Okpebholo is robbed of his victory.

The group also described as “absurdity and total brigandage” the way and manner the Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state, against all known guidelines and processes in conducting party primaries, went ahead to announce Hon Dennis Idahosa as the winner of last Saturday’s APC governorship primary.

Addressing Journalists, counsel to Concerned APC Stakeholders, Barrister Douglas Ogbankwa, (Esq) on behalf of the group, also condemned the “violent brutalization of members of the Nigeria Union Journalists, (NUJ) who were there to carry out their constitutional responsibility as the watchdog of the society.”

The group noted, “The only recognised and recognisable Chief Returning Officer for the Edo 2024 governorship primaries appointed by the APC National Working Committee is Stanley Uzomaka Ogbuaja. Gov. Hope Uzodinma was only a ceremonial chairman of the process.

“It does not behove on him to declare the results .Dr. Ogbuaja declared the results as required by law, and we are afraid that if any other candidate not declared by the Officer required by law is presented to INEC, the All Progressives Congress may not have a Candidate for the Edo 2024 Governorship Elections.

“This is because the process of the election of candidates is very technical and specific. Any slip that is generated by political expediency shall cost the APC dearly. This is the experience gleaned from judicial precedence on the score. There are a plethora of authorities, which are extant on this issue.

“We wish to state with untainted equanimity, that any other candidate being taunted about as a purported candidate of the APC for the Edo 2024 governorship elections, aside the duly returned candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo , presupposes that APC does not have a candidate in Edo State .

“It means that APC will be given the Rivers State and Zamfara states treatments, which unfortunately are tied to the antics of the same man that is behind this charade, being attempted in Edo State. It was Mark Twain the American Writer that said “History does not repeat itself, at best it rhymes “.

“We humbly and passionately call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress , H.E. Abdulahi Ganduje to do the right thing and endorse the legally returned candidate as provided by the APC Constitution.

“We do not want the Banani Scenario as it was in Adamawa State, where the election was voided because the Returning Officer’s duties were hijacked by the Resident Electoral Officer, who is currently being Prosecuted.”
