Published

on

Bauchi based group, Coalition of United Civil Society Organizations, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to caution the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, former Air Marshal Saddique Abubakar against alleged use of violence in places of campaign.

The group, through its Convener, Dr. Yunusa Ndargomi, made the call in a news conference in Bauchi on Saturday.

According to the group, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar campaign train had been nothing but “a calamity’ to the good and peace-loving people of Bauchi State.

The group added that cases of violence and alleged murder had been recorded in some places of his campaign.

“His campaign is characterised by show of force and violent intimidation on innocent citizens who in one way or the other showed disapproving gestures against his aspirations.

“Security attached to him has shot and killed two innocent persons in Akuyam district of Misau LGA while on a campaign tour, the reason for that act of violence remains show of intolerance in a democratic setting.

“Same scenario happened in Gumau town of Toro LGA where thugs and security attached to him fired live ammunition to disperse crowds as they shouted the slogan “Bamayi” and injuring scores in the process.

“Recently security attached to him also shot about 5 innocent people in Duguri district of Alkaleri LGA of the state, killing 1 person in the process and injuring many,” said the group.

It also alleged that the APC governorship candidate had never shown empathy and had neither visited the families of the victims, nor sympathized with their families or their communities.

This has further confirmed the notion that the APC flag bearer has approved the use of violent intimidation against the innocent citizens he so desires to rule.

“On a final note, we wish to plead with Mr President to as a matter of urgency to call Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar to order and caution the security to avoid being partisan in their line of duties,” it said.

It could be recalled that the APC governorship candidate, Saddique Abubakar had earlier said that anyone accusing his team of killing is out of his mind.

He was concerned that the incident in the governor’s hometown was being misrepresented.

For the first time in the history of politics in Bauchi state, we are seeing thuggery taking full control of the activities of those who are entrusted with providing security to the citizens.

“I want to say that, I have been in the security sector for 42 years and I left Bauchi as a young boy of 19 years to go and join the NAF to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians and to also ensure that the territorial integrity of Nigeria and its national sovereignty is not undermined by any forces.

“By the special grace of God, I finished my services after 42 years and I am back home now to Bauchi

“I want you to take note of this information. For somebody who has been in the security sector, who has been at the forefront of ensuring that the lives of Nigerians are protected, their property is protected, for anybody to allege that my team will be going out to kill anybody, I think that person must be out if his or her mind,” he said

Aregbesola Emerges ADC Interim National Secretary

Published

on

Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has agreed to serve as the Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress.

A former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufa’i, Aregbesola bemoaned the current political structure in Nigeria, saying that, “our political landscape is plagued by parties that lack ideological depth. They are empty shells, merging and splitting, not over policy or principle, but over power and personality. There is little regard for the people, and even less for the country.”

According to the ex-Osun Governor and two-time Commissioner for Works in Lagos state, noted, “The ADC is not perfect, but it stands for something. It was forged in resistance, sharpened by vision, and led by men and women who believe in justice, dignity, equality, inclusivity of all interests and true freedom. It has character. It has soul. It is therefore a true platform for expressing their aspirations.

“Sadly, in Nigeria today, we cannot say the same about many of our political parties.

“Political parties, therefore, are not merely machines for winning elections but institutions for mobilising, organising, energising, educating, empowering and encouraging the people towards their emancipation and development.

“A political party is not a platform for opportunism. It is not a mere vehicle to power for the few, nor a tool for personal ambition. A political party, in its truest form, is a living institution built on values, guided by ideals, and accountable to the people it seeks to serve.

“As the National Secretary, I will work to build a party that has a clear ideological compass as a party that is absolutely committed to the people, rooted in democratic values, rule of law, social justice, accountability, transparency and national development.
