Security operatives comprising the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, DSS, Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Edo State Security Network (local vigilante), as early as 7:30am occupied the Benin Museum Park venue meant for the one year EndSARS memorial in Benin, the Edo State capital.
Benin Museum Park is located at Oba Ovoramwem Square popularly called Ring Road, located at the centre of Benin City.
As the time of filing this report, the compined security operatives were strategically positioned at major routes that lead to the park, centre of Benin City.
No fewer than nine routes from different parts of the city link to the Museum Park.
At the main entrance to the Museum Park (Forestry Route), four security Hilux were parked at the time of filing this report.
Also, operation Wabaizgan (combined security outfit comprising Police, DSS, NSCDC in Edo State) vehicles were parked at other strategic locations of the City such as at the front of the state House of Assembly, Ekewan Road, etc. Other security vehicles were also parked at other locations around the Museum Park.
Meanwhile there was mild drama at the entrance of the Museum Park that could have led to infraction between security operatives especially the local vigilantes and members of the civil society organistions but was averted by a senior police officer’s intervention who pleaded for a calm.
Trouble started when one of the CSO members was about driving into the Museum Park but was stopped by one of the local vigilantes who closed the gate and requested the occupants to come down from the vehicle.
This angered the CSO member who came down from the vehicle and was almost exchanging blows with the local vigilante man.
He was irked by vigilante’s request because the person inside the car of whom the vigilante asked to come down is a victim of EndSARS.
He was reportedly amputated after security operatives reportedly rammed into him and others during the protest last year in Auchi, Edo State.
Chaos As Benin Bus Drivers Withdraw Service Over Alleged Extortion By EDSMA, PUWOV
There was chaos in several parts of Benin City, Monday, as bus drivers mostly those driving mini-buses withdrew their services from the roads over alleged extortion by personnel of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) and Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV).
Commuters going from Wire Road to Ugowo; New Benin to Ugbowo in the metropolis had to trek long distances before they could get vehicles and the vehicles terminated their trip by Uselu.
Due to the blockade by the protesting drivers, commuters were forced to trek the remaining distance to their destinations as the protesting bus drivers blocked parts of the Benin – Ugbowo Road.
The drivers took over some sections of the road causing traffic in some areas while other sections were completely deserted.
One of the drivers, Emmanuel Kanya, complained no enough signs on the road to show where to park or not, adding that the extortion is already telling on their ability to pay back the buses they have acquired on hire purchase between N2.7m to N3m.
But the Managing Director of EDTSMA, Dennis Oloriegbe, denied the allegation.
He said, “We have gone the extra mile to educate them on where they should park or not to park. We put signposts and they go to remove them at night. We have arrested a driver with our signposts in his boot so they have to obey the law.”
