Food Seller Murders 33-year-old Man At Ebonyi Bar

A 33-year-old man, whose name is yet-to be ascertained as at the time of filling in this report, was on Monday, murdered at a drinking joint along Jemeni Street, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

A reliable source, who spoke to The PUNCH, on grounds of anonymity, said the incident occured at about 7pm, adding that it has created tension and panic within the area.

Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Garba, said that the two men were drunk and exchanged argument at the joint.

Garba said, “The incident happened and victim died. The two of them- both the man that killed the man and the one that died came to the joint together.

“But of course, you should know they were already drunk. The two of them just had little argument in that beer parlour, and one of them took bottle and smashed it on the head of the other person. The incident happened between the two of them.

“The one, whose head was hit with the bottle was rushed to the hospital and he could not survived it.

“By now, I’m sure my men would have arrested the suspect. I’m sure I will be able to give you feedback later.”

The source said that trouble stated when the suspect simply identified as Ayoola who is a food seller at Ekeaba Market attempted hitting the deceased with his car which made the deceased to question his action.

The source said,”Usually, people do gather at the new joint to eat and drink and that faithful day, the deceased was coming into the joint and the suspect with his car drove so rough that he almost hit the deceased with his car.

“The deceased became furious and questioned why he should drive roughly that he almost hit him, the suspect started raising his voice and threatening the deceased.

“Infact, from all indication, it seems both of them might have had issues before now or were already drunk.

“People at the joint were trying to calm the suspect down but he continued threatening the deceased.

“To the amazement of many people, the suspect picked up a bottle and smashed it on the deceased forehead and the young man fell down on the ground.

“Few minutes later, it was realized that the deceased had become motionless and blood gushing out from his mouth and nose. Many of the people there ran away.”

The source stated that shortly after the incident, policemen arrived the scene of the incident and arrested the suspect and took the corpse of the deceased away.

Four Die As Bomb Explosion Rocks Borno

A bomb explosion has reportedly killed four travellers in Borno State, with many others sustaining injuries.

According to reports by local media, the bomb exploded around 3:00 pm on Wednesday along the Damboa-Maiduguri road.

The incident involved a car carrying an unconfirmed number of passengers.

DAILY POST reports that bomb explosions also occurred a few weeks ago along Damboa-Maiduguri road, killing seven people.

The road is one of the major routes for terrorists, who often plant bombs to discourage other users.

JUST IN: Many Killed As Soldiers, Bandits Exchange Gunfire In Kaduna

Scores of bandits and some military personnel have been killed following a gun battle in Niger and Kaduna States.

Nigerian Army Headquarters made the disclosure in a statement posted on its official X handle on Wednesday.

The statement said the operations were carried out in Kwanar Dutse Mairiga and Boka, Niger State, and Aungwan Turai, Chikun Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State.

The daredevil terrorists had launched an unprovoked attack on the aforementioned areas.

According to the statement, in response to the attacks, “land and air component troops launched several counter-attacks that eliminated scores of bandits in the encounters.

Police Detain 3 Nsukka Masqueraders For Allegedly Assaulting Residents

The police command in Enugu State has detained three masqueraders in the Nsukka area of the state for allegedly assaulting law-abiding citizens.

The command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement in Enugu on Tuesday that police operatives, with the assistance of members of the community, led to the arrest of the suspects on June 23 at 3:30 p.m.

He said that the arrest of the suspects was in connection with the alleged physical assault of citizens by the ‘Oriokpa’ Masquerade group on June 22 as seen in a viral video.

The suspects, along with others still at large, took advantage of the ‘Oriokpa’ Masquerade celebration to assault several innocent members of the public, inflicting bodily injuries on them.

“One of the victims was hospitalised for treatment due to injuries sustained during the attack.

“The masqueraders initially resisted police arrest and fled the scene.

“However, with the assistance of law-abiding community members, the three suspects were later identified and apprehended,” he said.

The spokesman said that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, had ordered a thorough investigation into the case to ensure that justice was served.

Ndukwe quoted the commissioner as saying that masquerade celebration was a sacred and symbolic aspect of the nation’s culture.

He said that the state police chief, however, decried the actions of those who exploited the occasion to commit criminal acts.

Ndukwe said that the commissioner warned against the use of cultural festivities as a cover for fomenting trouble and committing crimes against fellow citizens, as perpetrated by the ‘Oriokpa’ masqueraders.

The command is assuring the public that all those involved in the assault of law-abiding citizens will be brought to justice,” he added.
