Footballers Who Fell Under Spell Of Witch Doctors

“It was like a spiral,” said Gilles Yapi Yapo, a former Ivory Coast international football star who said he was cheated out of 200,000 euros ($213,000) by a witch doctor.
“You are like a slave and it can be really damaging,” the 41-year-old said of the two years he spent under the spell of a traditional healer, or marabout.
The midfielder, who now manages a team in the Swiss second division, was “going through a difficult period” playing for the French Ligue 1 side Nantes when his uncle recommended he see a healer in Paris.
“I wasn’t really attracted by the occult,” Yapi Yapo told AFP, “but growing up in the Ivory Coast going to a marabout was normal, and it isn’t seen as bad as long as you are not looking to harm anyone.”
The healer said his family had been “cursed”, which was stopping him “succeeding and being happy” and prescribed making “sacrifices to counteract the curses”.
Sacrificing a cock, goat or ram started at 500 euros and began to climb to “colossal sums”, he said.
Then one day it became darker, “something like black magic”, Yapi Yapo said.
“The marabout made me believe that the spirits he worked for liked me and wanted to make me rich.
“That was the bait,” he said.
– ‘Sacrifice his son’ –
The sacrifices needed to attain these riches cost “40,000, 50,000, then 60,000 euros”.

When the footballer got financially stretched, the witch doctor said that “‘if he has no more money he’ll have to sacrifice his son’. I had the strength to say ‘stop’ and I never went back to him,” Yapi Yapo said.
In two years, he said he was conned into paying 200,000 euros, and got “nothing positive back”.
“He knew how to put me into a spiral and I lost the ability to think clearly…”
The footballer said his Christian faith helped give him the strength to put an end to the hold the marabout had on him.
Some witch doctors “threaten vengeance”, he said, “so there is a fear of breaking away from them.”
Joel Thibault, an evangelical pastor to several top athletes in France, has had to deal with the “disastrous consequences” of footballers and basketball players caught in similar circumstances.

“I know there are clubs that allow players to go to Senegal after they get injured because doctors can’t treat them. They come back and play with amulets and protection belts.”
Those who go to healers in France have told him “that when things are going less well they are told to make more sacrifices, to pay more for them, and then it spirals,” Thibault added.
“I see the damage… players who are depressed and who have had suicidal thoughts.”
– ‘He became like a god’ –
Another Ivory Coast-born footballer, Cisse Baratte told AFP how he went through the same hell.
When he began playing for a top club in Abidjan at 16, he was told that healers could make him perform better and protect him “from jealousy”.

“I fell into the trap,” he admitted. Baratte, now 55, started by taking “showers with potions” prescribed by a witch doctor, having sacrifices made and wearing a leather protection belt that had verses of the Koran sewn into it.
“As soon as I got injured or things weren’t going well, I would go to him. He became like a god to me… You become dependent and he took advantage of that.”
He turned to witch doctors again when he began playing in Europe in the 1990s.
“I was always injured,” he said. “The marabout said that it was because I wasn’t taking the showers with the potions at the right time or because it was cold…”
In the dressing rooms, he noticed teammates from Senegal or Cameroon also had “protection” — “perfumes” or belts under their jerseys.
– Pogba case –
Thibault said it has taken the Paul Pogba extortion case, where the French star was held against his will last year, to throw a spotlight on how serious the problem has become “with more and more money” in football.

The French World Cup winner was accused by his brother and a childhood friend of paying a witch doctor to cast a spell on his teammate Kylian Mbappe — an allegation that Pogba and the marabout denied to police.
“Players tell me that when some have anti-doping tests, doctors can’t get a needle into them until they have called their marabout… So people know about this,” Thibault insisted.
Several healers say they feel “stigmatised” by the headlines the Pogba case has sparked.
“The controversy has damaged our profession,” Monsieur Fakoly, a Guinean-born healer who works outside Paris told AFP. “It’s really the dark side.” People should distinguish between witch doctors “who cast spells” and healers “who help”, he said.
But as long as there are players look for “shortcuts to success”, witch doctors’ influence on the game is “not going to stop, unfortunately”, said Yapi Yapo.

Inter Miami fought back from 3-1 down to grab a 3-3 draw at MLS Eastern Conference leaders the Philadelphia Union on Saturday thanks to a stoppage-time leveller from substitute Telasco Segovia.
Israeli forward Tai Baribo scored twice for Philadelphia to give them the two goal advantage but Lionel Messi gave Miami hope with an 87th-minute free-kick before Venezuelan Segovia dramatically grabbed the point.
Quinn Sullivan, called up this week by Mauricio Pochettino to the US national team squad, fired Philadelphia ahead in the seventh minute with a sweet strike after Miami’s defence had failed to close down.
Baribo made it 2-0 with an instinctive finish in the 44th minute as Miami’s defensive troubles continued.

The visitors got a foothold in the game in the 60th minute when Noah Allen floated in a cross from the left which was met by a firm header from Argentine Tadeo Allende.
But Philadelphia restored their two-goal cushion when, from a long throw, Miami were unable to clear and Jean-Jacques Danley pounced on the loose ball and Baribo fired home.
Messi beat Union keeper Andrew Rick with a characteristically well driven free-kick for his sixth goal of the season three minutes from the end of regulation time to set up a frantic finale.
Jovan Lukic hit the bar from inside the box early in stoppage time as Philly looked to wrap-up the win but they were left crestfallen in the fifth minute of stoppage time when, after good work from Messi, Segovia pounced and blasted home.

There was still time for one more chance but an unmarked Danley, who had an outstanding game in midfield, somehow headed wide from close range.
While the result was a welcome sign of character from Miami, they remain with just one win in their past eight games in all competitions having conceded 23 goals.
Javier Mascherano’s side are sixth in the Eastern Conference and the former Barcelona and Argentina midfielder praised his team’s response.
“We showed character, personality. It was another difficult start of the game for us because in the beginning we conceded the goal… but the guys showed they want want to fight to get out of this situation,” said the Miami coach.

“We are in a bad trend, but with a lot of spirit to come back to be the team we were at the beginning of the season,” he added before demanding better from his back line.
“We cannot concede every single corner kick and every single throw in and give opponents opportunities to score… we need to be more focused in those situations,” Mascherano said.
USA forward Patrick Agyemang had scored twice for Dean Smith’s Charlotte but Malte Amundsen looked to have earned the Columbus Crew a point before Spaniard Pep Biel grabbed a 75th-minute winner for a 3-2 triumph.

Mexican star Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano’s stoppage-time header earned San Diego a 2-1 victory over the winless defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy.
Former Arsenal and France striker Olivier Giroud’s 77th-minute goal earned Los Angeles FC a 2-2 draw at Montreal while Duncan McGuire’s first league goal of the season gave Orlando a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.
Argentine Max Urruti’s 84th-minute goal gave the New England Revolution a 3-3 draw at Sporting Kansas City after the visitors had let an early 2-0 lead slip.

As the English Premier League, EPL wraps up its season, the title race and relegation battle are long settled.
However, the race for European spots remains wide open — with Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League places still undecided.
Here are five key matches on the final day of the EPL that could shape who plays continental football next season:
1. Fulham v Manchester City
City need just a point to secure a Champions League spot. A win seals it, while a loss could open the door for teams below—especially if goal difference becomes a factor.

2. Manchester United v Aston Villa
Villa still have a slim chance at Champions League qualification but need to beat United and hope other results go their way. At minimum, they’ll be aiming to clinch a Europa League slot.
3. Newcastle v Everton
Newcastle are currently in the top five and in control of their Champions League fate. A win at home will ensure a return to Europe’s top competition. A draw might still be enough depending on other results.
4. Nottingham Forest v Chelsea
Forest, sitting seventh, host fifth-placed Chelsea in a massive showdown. A Forest win could see them leapfrog Chelsea, potentially knocking the Blues out of the European spots — depending on goal difference and other results. Nuno Santo’s side would require at least one of Newcastle or Aston Villa to lose their match against Everton and Man United, respectively to have a real chance of making it to the Champions League.

Meanwhile, if Enzo Maresca’s side draw with Nottingham Forest, they would either need Aston Villa to lose their match against Manchester United or Newcastle United to not win their match.l against Everton.
5. Tottenham v Brighton
With Spurs already guaranteed Champions League football via their Europa League win, Brighton are chasing a top-eight finish. They need at least a point to stay ahead of Brentford for a possible Conference League slot.
What’s at Stake?
Champions League: 3rd to 5th places still in contention
Europa League: 6th place assured; others depend on cup results
Conference League: Still up for grabs — especially if Brighton or Brentford finish 8th and Chelsea miss out
All matches kick off at 4pm Nigeria time on Sunday, and with so many permutations, expect drama until the final whistle.

Real Madrid appointed Xabi Alonso to replace Carlo Ancelotti as coach on Sunday, with the Spaniard to take over from June 1 and lead the team at the Club World Cup.
“Xabi Alonso will be the Real Madrid coach for the next three seasons, from June 1, 2025 until June 30, 2028,” said Real Madrid in a statement.
With veteran Italian coach Ancelotti taking the reins of the Brazilian national team, Madrid secured a deal with former midfielder Alonso, whom they have been linked with for months.
Alonso, 43, leaves German side Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the Bundesliga season after finishing second.
“Alonso is one of the biggest legends at Real Madrid and in world football,” continued Los Blancos’ statement.
“He wore our shirt in 236 games between 2009 and 2014. During that time he won six trophies.”

Alonso will be officially presented on Monday at 1030 GMT.
The Spaniard coached Leverkusen to a league and German Cup double in the 2023-2024 campaign, with his team unbeaten in the top flight, making him a target for Europe’s top clubs.
Basque coach Alonso had an agreement with Leverkusen to allow him to depart if one of his former sides, including Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, wanted to hire him.
Ancelotti’s Madrid endured a disappointing campaign, winning the European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup but suffering Champions League quarter-final elimination by Arsenal.
Barcelona beat Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey finals and then reclaimed the Liga throne from their arch-rivals, meaning they failed to win a major trophy.
Madrid added French superstar Kylian Mbappe last summer but Ancelotti found it hard to include him in the team alongside Vinicius Junior without destabilising it.

Mbappe netted 31 La Liga goals which should earn him the European Golden Shoe, but Alonso’s main job will be to restore the team’s solidity without compromising the attack.
After losing two matches in the whole of the previous campaign, this season Madrid slumped to 14 defeats.
– La Decima –
Alonso will replace one of the most successful managers in Madrid’s history, despite their struggles this season.
Ancelotti, 65, took Los Blancos to 15 trophies during two spells at the club, spanning six years.
The Italian won three Champions League trophies in Madrid, including La Decima — Madrid’s 10th — in 2014, with Alonso as part of his squad, although he was suspended for the final.
Alonso was also coached by Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Vicente del Bosque among others and is considered tactically adroit and an excellent organiser, which could be ideal for a Madrid side that has lacked balance.

The midfielder won two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup with Spain as he helped La Roja dominate the international game.
After retiring from playing in 2017 he coached Real Madrid and Real Sociedad at youth level before being appointed by Bayer Leverkusen in 2022.
Real Madrid have already signed defender Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth this summer and Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to follow, with his contract coming to an end at Anfield.
Madrid are trying to bring in the England international before the Club World Cup this summer, which will be Alonso’s first chance to win silverware.
Real Madrid face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in Miami on June 18 in their opening match at FIFA’s lucrative summer tournament, which will be the first look at Alonso’s side.
