US President Donald Trump will join other world leaders in Manchester next year for the G20 leaders’ summit, with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham saying he is “really pleased” to welcome the US president to the city.

The G20 summit, an annual meeting of the world’s major economies, will be held on November 27 and 28, 2027, at the Manchester Central Convention Centre.

The event will be the largest summit ever held in Manchester, with preparations expected to intensify as the United Kingdom prepares to take over the G20 presidency.

Manchester was selected as the host city earlier this year, before Burnham became prime minister. Downing Street said preparations would now step up, with hundreds of local people expected to be involved in organising the event.

Burnham, who previously served as mayor of Greater Manchester, said he was looking forward to welcoming Trump despite comments the US president previously made about the city.

In June, as Burnham was emerging as a likely candidate to become prime minister, Trump referred to him as “the mayor of a town”.

Burnham said that during his first telephone conversation with Trump, he addressed the comment directly.

He told the president: “Manchester isn’t ‘some town’…this is Manchester”.

Burnham said the appropriate response was to laugh about the exchange and “move beyond it”.

His relationship with Trump also marks a change from comments Burnham made while serving as mayor.

At the time, Burnham told the Manchester Evening News that he “wouldn’t welcome” a visit from the American president.

However, speaking to reporters while travelling to New York, where he is scheduled to meet Trump for the first time on Tuesday, Burnham said political figures sometimes make different statements at different stages of their careers.

“Politicians say things throughout their career, but now the important thing is to focus on the moment you are in,” he said.

Councillor Garry Bridges, the new leader of Manchester City Council, said hosting the G20 summit would have been “unthinkable a couple of years ago”.

He said he hoped Trump’s visit would help change the US president’s perception of Manchester.

The UK previously hosted the G20 summit in London in 2009. The security operation for that meeting was estimated to have cost £7.2m.

In addition to the main summit in Manchester, events will be held across the UK during the country’s G20 presidency.

The United States currently holds the presidency, with this year’s summit scheduled to take place in Miami in December.

The G20 brings together 19 of the world’s largest economies, alongside representatives of the European Union and African Union.

The group represents about two-thirds of the world’s population and more than 85% of global wealth.

The G20 was established in 1999 with the aim of promoting financial stability and international economic cooperation.

The new campaign has already produced a perfect record for Manchester City, an early setback for defending champions Arsenal, strong starts for Brighton, Brentford, Leeds United, Liverpool and Everton, and difficult beginnings for Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Bournemouth.

Manchester City lead the table with 15 points, three clear of Arsenal. Brighton are third on 10 points, while Brentford, Leeds, Liverpool and Everton have nine each.

Here are the main lessons from the opening five games.

Manchester City’s perfect start

Enzo Maresca has won all five Premier League matches since taking charge of Manchester City, with Sunday’s 5-3 victory over Sunderland extending their run to seven consecutive wins in all competitions.

City have scored 13 goals and conceded five in the league, with their latest win keeping them three points clear at the top.

However, the Sunderland game also exposed defensive weaknesses, with Brian Brobbey scoring a hat-trick.

Maresca acknowledged that City still have plenty to improve on despite their perfect start.

Arsenal are beatable

Arsenal looked set for another strong start until Brighton ended their perfect run with a 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.

The defeat was Arsenal’s first in the league this season and their heaviest since May 2023, when they also lost 3-0 to Brighton.

A win would have given Mikel Arteta’s side an eighth consecutive victory in all competitions, but Brighton exposed areas the champions will need to address.

“That’s not going to take away what the team has done and the boys have done in the last six or seven weeks since coming back from the World Cup,” Arteta said.

“What we’ve done, the way we’ve competed and the amount of games we’ve won has been remarkable – but this is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level.”

Arsenal remain second on 12 points, three behind City.

Brighton and Brentford strong start

Brighton have made one of the strongest starts in the division and moved into third after their win over Arsenal.

They have 10 points from five games and have scored 16 goals, the highest total in the league.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side have also beaten the reigning champions at home in each of the past three seasons.

Brentford are fourth on nine points and remain unbeaten after five matches.

Keith Andrews’ side followed three draws and a win with a 3-0 victory over Chelsea, continuing their impressive start after Thomas Frank’s departure.

Leeds, Liverpool and Everton mixed resuts

Leeds United are also unbeaten after five matches, with two wins and three draws leaving Daniel Farke’s side fifth on nine points.

Their latest result was a goalless draw against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool also have nine points after beating Bournemouth 1-0 on Sunday, with Alexander Isak scoring the only goal.

The victory moved Andoni Iraola’s side into sixth place.

Everton are seventh, also on nine points, after a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

All three clubs have made solid starts and remain within touching distance of the early leaders.

Hull City quick start

Promoted Hull City sit eighth with eight points after five matches.

Their only defeat came against Newcastle United on Saturday, when they lost 2-1.

Two wins and two draws before that result have given Hull an encouraging start to life in the Premier League.

Their position above several established top-flight clubs shows the promoted side have adapted quickly to the demands of the division.

Unbalanced Newcastle

Newcastle United are ninth with eight points after two wins, two draws and one defeat.

They came from behind to beat Hull 2-1 on Saturday, with Mohamed Ali-Cho scoring the decisive goal.

The Magpies have scored nine goals but also conceded nine, highlighting the balance they still need to find between attack and defence.

Unpredictable Chelsea

Chelsea sit 10th with seven points after a mixed opening five games as Xabi Alonso’s side have scored 10 goals but conceded 12, leaving them with a negative goal difference.

Their latest setback was a 3-0 defeat by Brentford, after earlier results included wins over Fulham and Brighton, a defeat by Arsenal and a draw against Hull.

Chelsea have produced plenty of goals, but their defensive record remains a concern.

Ipswich’s mixed return

Ipswich Town are 11th with six points after two wins and three defeats.
