Groom Drowns As Flood Wreak Havoc In Ondo

A Federal government worker, who got married recently, Mr Glory JATO, has reportedly been swept away by flood in Oba Ile, in Akure North council area of Ondo state.

The middle-aged man, according to sources was said to be coming from work when he was swept away by flood on Friday.

According to the Assistant Secretary of the Landlords Association of Bethel Estate, Oba Ile, Pastor Gbenga Ojuloge, the death of the victim was pathetic

Ojuloge said the community needed government intervention to help dredge the water to prevent future occurrences.

He pointed out that “the water had turned to a death trap that always takes lives year in and year out, as properties and residents were no longer safe from the constant threat of the river.

“All the efforts made by the community to ensure that the flood was kept at bay every year always remained futile.

“We are using this opportunity to draw the attention of both the Federal Government and State Government and the local government to what is actually going on here in our community.

“This is the main access to the community, the flood is already taking what we have used our years of our lives to construct.

“Everything you can see on the bridge is actually the effort of the landlords of the community, we discovered that the flood will just come and push everything away, so we are calling in the government to come to our aid.

“On Friday we lost a soul here and that is why we are calling and we want everyone to know that this is the main access to all the flood coming from Ijapo, Alagbaka, oja oba, so immediately there is rain, no access to our roads again.”

One of the landlords,Olusola Osupala who also spoke with newsmen, said once it rained, access to the estate was always cut off.

Osupala said the community had requested and written to several intervention agencies to help save the situation, but to no avail.

“Over the years, we have been suffering flood in this community and all what you can see in this estate is community effort up to our light, we contributed, we bought transformer, season out of season.

“Infact, couple of days ago, someone died on this bridge because of flood, he was drowned, we don’t have access to the bridge, we don’t have access to our home once it rained.

“We can no longer continue like this, we need government to dredge this river for us,” he said.

Another landlady in the community, Mrs Oluwtosin Ibitoye said the death of the young man was painful as he was part of the rescue party to save the life of the young man.

Ibitoye said once it rained the road would be cut off and residents and children would not be able to go to work and school respectively.

“This road is a major road to all the community and we appeal to the state government to come to our rescue, we do lose lives during the raining season.”

She added that: “We have a situation that we do lose people when it rains, on Friday, we lost a young married man to this flood, which is so painful so we appeal to the state government we appeal to Akeredolu to come to our rescue.”

VIDEO: Police Rescue Man Who Attempted Suicide On High-tension Pole In Anambra

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued a 28-year-old man, identified as Okwudili Onyiba, who attempted to take his own life by climbing a high-tension power transmission pole in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening behind Grace of God Mission, off NEPA Road, Awada.

The statement read, “Anambra State Police Operatives attached to the Awada Division, in the evening of 2nd September 2025, successfully rescued a man who attempted to commit suicide by climbing a power transmission high-tension pole situated behind Grace of God Mission, off NEPA Road, Awada.

Upon receiving the distress information, the operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area to prevent danger, and controlled the large crowd that had gathered. After several minutes of persuasion by the Police and some concerned members of the public, the man eventually climbed down safely.

“He was immediately taken into protective custody at the station, where he identified himself as Mr. Okwudili David Onyiba, aged 28 years.”

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu, was said to have since ordered a comprehensive medical and mental health evaluation for the victim.

He further assured that the command would provide necessary support to ensure his well-being.

The command also urged members of the public to seek lawful and peaceful ways of addressing personal challenges.

Lagos Enforces Ban, Seizes Single-use Plastics From Supermarkets

The Lagos State Government has seized banned single-use plastics from some supermarkets in different areas of the state.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a video shared on X.com on Wednesday.

The video revealed the enforcement officers confiscating single-use plastics, cups, and products with attached single use plastic straws.

Wahab’s caption read, “Our enforcement team today visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki to enforce the ban on single use plastics.

This action is part of our wider efforts to ensure compliance with the etate’s directive on phasing out SUP, which poses serious environmental risks and worsens flooding across Lagos.

“The team also visited Blend and Temple Hill Supermarkets in Ire-Akari, Jendol Supermarket in Jakande Estate, Ejigbo and Lastprize and Reno supermarkets situated in Liasu Road in Idimu.”

Wahab noted that the team will continue to monitor, enforce, and work with businesses to adopt sustainable alternatives that safeguard our environment.

The enforcement which commenced on July 1 comes after an 18-month moratorium during which businesses were urged to phase out prohibited plastics and adopt eco-friendly alternatives.

The state government says the move is part of a wider clampdown across markets and retail outlets to ensure compliance with its environmental protection laws.

JUST IN: Benue, Plateau Attacks: DSS Arraigns Nine Prime Suspects

The Department of State Services, DSS, has arraigned nine prime suspects in connection with the recent killings in Benue and Plateau States.

Channels Television reports that the DSS also charged a suspected gunrunner arrested with Seven M16 rifles.

The nine suspects were being accused of complicity in recent deadly attacks in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, as well as in parts of Plateau State.
