The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr Paul Odama, on Friday evening, paraded a middle-aged medical doctor, Ayodele Joseph, over alleged sedation and r*pe of a nurse while operating on the nurse in his hospital in Ilorin.

Joseph, the Chief Medical Director of Ayodele Hospital, Sawmill Area, Ilorin, was among the 13 suspects paraded before newsmen at the Police Headquarters.

Parading the suspects, Odama said that Joseph was one of the most dangerous medical practitioners in the state and warned people to be wary of patronizing him.

The police Commissioner said, “On the 5th of May, 2023, one female victim (name withheld) a nurse by profession reported to the Police that she went to Ayodele Hospital at NO. 290, Sawmill Area, Lagos Road, Ilorin for surgery, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ayodele Joseph, during the treatment sedated the patient which led her to become unconscious.

“Before the sedation, fearing any mishap, the patient activated her telephone and placed it in a vantage position to record the surgery unknown to the doctor, before the expected surgery.

“She woke up from sleep after the surgery to find herself fully naked and when viewing the recorded video, she discovered that the said Dr. Ayodele Joseph had unlawful s*xual intercourse with her while under sedation.

“Investigation led to the recovery of the video recording of the s*xual activity of the said doctor on the victim which was also corroborated by the medical examinations conducted on the victim”, he said.

Odama continued, “This same suspect (Dr Ayodele Joseph) had recently been arraigned in court by the Police for the offences of Criminal Conspiracy, Negligent Conduct, Causing Hurt by Act Endangering life or Personal Safety of Others and Culpable Homicide arising from his unprofessional conduct resulting in the death of one Nneka Akanike ‘F’ in his hospital under questionable circumstances which led to him being charged to court.”

The police boss who said that the leadership of the state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association had been contacted on the case said that the hospital premises had been cordoned off adding that the medical doctor would be charged to court again for r*pe after the conclusion of the investigation.

However, Joseph denied the allegation of r*pe being levelled against him adding that the nurse he was alleged to have raped was his girlfriend.

The medical director who said that the nurse was his employee and had been his girlfriend for eight years described the alleged r*pe as a set-up by the nurse.

He confirmed that the nurse who was treated and operated on for utopic pregnancy in his hospital decided to set him up to extort money from him.

“She is my girlfriend and we have dated for eight years, I trained her as a nurse, I sponsored her to a School of Nursing in Lagos and I employed her, how can I r*pe a lady that I have had intercourse with several times, what else do I want to see in her body. She only wants to set me up to rip me off some money. Already, she has collected a substantial amount of money which is with her.”

She had already collected about N500,000 from me on this issue and she is still demanding more money.

A downpour on Wednesday night wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, resulting in extensive damage to the facility and facilitating the escape of 118 inmates.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the spokesperson, Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Adamu Duza, on Thursday.

Duza noted that the downpour caused severe damage to the custodial centre’s infrastructure, including a breach in the perimeter fence, which allowed the inmates to flee.

In response, the NCoS swiftly activated its recapturing protocols, collaborating with other security agencies to recover 10 of the escaped inmates.

Efforts to recapture the remaining fleeing inmates are said to be ongoing.

Recognising the vulnerability of aging facilities, many of which were built during the colonial era, Duza acknowledged that the NCoS was committed to modernising its infrastructure.

The statement further noted that the Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Francis John, assured the public that the situation was under control and urged them to carry on with their daily activities without fear.

The public was encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or sightings of escaped inmates to the nearest security agency.

The statement read in part, “A heavy downpour that lasted for several hours on the night of Wednesday, April 24, 2024, has wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centres, Suleja, Niger state, as well as surrounding buildings, destroying parts of the custodial facility, including its perimeter fence, giving way to the escape of 118 inmates of the facility.

“The service has immediately activated its recapturing mechanisms, and in conjunction with sister security agencies, has so far recaptured 10 fleeing inmates and taken them into custody, while we are in hot pursuit to recapture the rest.

Furthermore, it disclosed that a notable proportion of these prisons, some with histories dating back 70 to 80 years, faced difficulties in meeting even the most fundamental standards of living.

Software Engineer Sentenced To Life In Prison For R*ping Neighbour’s Daughter

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday, April 23, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, a 32-year-old software engineer, Chukwudi Anyanwu, who had unlawful sexual intercourse with his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter.

According to the prosecution, the convict committed the offence on Children’s Day (May 27) in 2021, on Thomas Animashaun Street, Aguda, Surulere, Lagos State.

Justice Rahman Oshodi who sentenced the defendant held that the prosecution was able to prove the ingredient of defilement of a minor against Anyanwu.

The judge held that the survivor’s evidence was corroborated by the medical report and that of her guardian (name withheld).

Justice Oshodi disregarded the testimonies of two police officers, ASP Iyabo Dawodu and Inspector Rebecca Osola-Jacob, who were called by the prosecution, saying they gave evidence for the defence instead of the prosecution which showed that their testimonies were tainted.

Justice Oshodi also held that the alibi and the issue of extortion which the convict relied on did not hold water.

According to him, the evidence presented in court against the convict had shown that he took advantage of the vulnerable 13-year-old girl who was living in the same compound as him.

He said the convict exploited his position of familiarity and authority to lure the survivor into his room on Children’s Day, 2021, and subjected her to the harrowing ordeal of sexual abuse.

The judge also said the convict’s action had undoubtedly inflicted deep psychological wounds that might take a lifetime to heal.

“You have shown a troubling lack of integrity and remorse throughout the proceedings and when you were confronted by the victim’s guardian about the heinous act, you initially denied any wrongdoing.

“However, when the young brave victim repeated the details of your abuse in your presence, you resorted to begging for forgiveness, claiming it was the work of the devil.

“This attempt to evade responsibility and downplay the severity of your action is reprehensible.”

The judge observed that even more concerning was that the convict expressed his intention to bribe the police to suppress the case and protect his reputation.

“This blatant disregard for the law and attempts to pervert the course of justice is a serious aggravating factor that cannot be overlooked,” Oshodi said.

The judge further held that the impact of the convict’s actions on the survivor could not be overstated as he had robbed her of her innocence, shattered her trust and left her with deep emotional scars. He said that the court must ensure that justice was served and that society received a clear message that such reprehensible acts would not be tolerated.

He said: “I hope this sentence brings some measure of closure and helps her on the path of healing.

“In line with the severe nature of the offence, the breach of trust involved, your lack of remorse, your attempt to pervert the course of justice and the long-lasting impact on the victim, I now sentence you, Chukwudi Anyanwu, to the mandatory life sentence under Section 137 of the Criminal Law (Supra).

“This sentence reflects the gravity of your actions and the need to protect vulnerable members of our society from predatory individuals like yourself.

“During your time in the custodial centre, I hope you reflect on the immense harm you have caused and take steps towards rehabilitation.”
