I Couldn’t Sleep, Bauchi Gov. Expresses Sadness Over Community Crisis

Our Reporter, Bauchi
Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, on Saturday, expressed sadness over a crisis that erupted in Katanga Community of Warji Local Government Area of the State on Friday.
Mohammed, who expressed the sadness when he visited the community on Saturday to condole with the people whose properties were burnt and those who sustained injury, said he could not catch a sleep since the time he received the news of the crisis.
INFO DAILY had reported that the Police spokesman in Bauchi State, SP Ahmed Wakil, earlier revealed that some irate youths set six houses and seven shops ablaze in the community on Friday.
He added that some community members also sustained injuries in the assault.

Wakil explained that the assault was a reaction to an alleged blasphemous message posted on the social media by a 40-year-old female employee of the local government council.
While addressing the people in the area, the state governor said “I’m really sad that this event happened because Warji is a home of peace.
“The Christian community here have been here for many years, although they are a minority but they live in peace with the majority.
“We must appreciate our diversity, our heterogeneity in faith, belief and tribe.
“My classmates are here. We went to school together and we never had this kind of problem. Someone like me, I have relations that are christians.
“We should understand that some people are creeping in to create this chaos. This place has good houses and somebody would come and put fire on it because his own sensibility, feelings has been touched.
“Let us not do it please and let us not harbour people who will do it. This social media is evil. Technology is good but sometimes it can be used against us.
“I didn’t sleep yesterday, my mind was here and thank the God that we both serve that no life was lost”.
Mohammed called on the people of the area to live in peace with one another and urged the leaders to make sure that peace and peaceful coexistence reign without reigniting the crisis.
The governor assured that whoever had a hand from both religions would be punished.
“Whatever the government would do to make sure that the pains of this unholy development is reduced, we will do it as a government.

“We will send SEMA to bring some relief for those who have been rendered homeless because you can see that the person who caused this thing is not even a member of this community, so you should not bear the brunt”, he said.
In his vote of thanks, Rev. Musa Bako of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Katanga Community, commended the governor for his quick response and promised to ensure that there won’t be any reprisal attacks.
He however, expressed displeasure on the inability of the local government chairman and the district head of the community to visit and condole with the people in the area on time.

The division in the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), took a new dimension on Wednesday as Prof. Monday Monday Lewis Igbafen-led caretaker committee approached the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Benin Judicial Division, seeking to affirm its authority and restrain a rival executive from parading itself as the council’s leadership.
Joined in the suit are the Edo State Government, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.
In a suit marked: NICN/BEN/12/2026, and filed before the court in Benin, the claimant, Igbafen, acting for himself and on behalf of the NLC Caretaker Committee in Edo State, is challenging the continued occupation of the union’s secretariat and control of its assets by members of the Bernard Egwakhide-led factional State Executive Council.

The claimants are asking the court to declare that the caretaker committee (Igbafen-led faction), constituted on August 11, 2025, by the NLC national leadership, remains the only lawful authority to administer the affairs of the Edo State Council pending fresh elections.
They further seek a declaration that the continued occupation of the NLC secretariat located at No. 1 Teboga Road, Benin City, as well as the retention of union assets, financial records, and official instruments by the defendants, is illegal and void.
The suit also prays for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from parading themselves as officials of the NLC Edo Council or interfering with the functions of the caretaker committee.
In addition, the claimants are seeking a mandatory order compelling the defendants to immediately hand over the secretariat, vehicles, financial documents, cheque books, and all other properties belonging to the union.

According to court documents made available to our correspondent, the crisis followed the dissolution of the Edo State Council by the NLC National Executive Council on February 27, 2025, over allegations of misconduct, anti-union activities, and constitutional violations.

“We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end.
“This will include major corporations such as MTN Group and MultiChoice Group. It is morally indefensible for businesses to thrive in an environment where the lives of Nigerians are protected, while Nigerians are subjected to fear and violence elsewhere.
“This contradiction will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said.
