Ibadan Explosion: How Oyo Oba Escaped Death

Published

on

What appeared like a little misunderstanding between an Ibadan Oba and his wife later turned out to be a victory song for them following an explosion that rocked Ibadan, the Oyo state capital last Tuesday .

It claimed some lives and several property. Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the scene of the explosion confirmed that illegal miners who stored explosive devices in their houses were responsible for the explosion. A relation of the Oba, Mr Akerele Alabi Ogun who narrated the king’s story to Saturday Vanguard said, “before the unpleasant explosion on Tuesday, the wife of one of the Obas crowned by the Olubadan, had prepared rice for dinner, expecting her husband to arrive home. But, when the Oba arrived home, he disappointed his wife who had prepared a delicious meal of rice and tasty stew for him by saying he didn’t want rice but would prefer beans instead.

“Both the Oba and the wife dragged the issue for a long time. The wife who is aged reportedly appealed to him saying, ‘please manage this rice for tonight, it will be a little bit late for me to be preparing beans now’. This still didn’t go down well with the Oba who insisted on having his request obeyed. The wife, not wanting to annoy her husband then agreed to cook beans and they were both sitting in the living room”.

“When the beans was half done, the Oba had started dozing off but the wife managed to keep him awake by engaging him in discussion and requested for more time for the beans to be done. But when the Oba could no longer keep himself awake, he told his wife he was going to bed and would not eat again. The wife bluntly refused, complaining why he would make her suffer for nothing despite the fact that she advised against cooking beans.

“She then said she would never allow the Oba to go to bed without eating the beans she had taken pains to prepare. As they were dragging this, there was a deafening blast which sent them to different directions. Both however managed to escape.

“When the dust settled, it was later discovered that a very large broken concrete had fallen on the same bed the Oba was to have slept on if his wife had not fought to stop him from going to bed. It then dawned on them that the insistence of the wife to ensure that her husband did not go to bed had saved his life”.

Mr Ogun, however, did not disclose the name of the Oba who is one of the Obas within the 11 local government areas of Ibadan. He said, “I was not granted permission to share the story but I think no harm has been done since I didn’t mention the Oba’s name or his local government”.

The Oba is said to be preparing for a special thanksgiving to appreciate God for sparing his life.

Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State, Ejeagha carved a timeless legacy with his unique blend of traditional Igbo folk music and storytelling.

His musical journey began in the 1960s, and by the 1980s, he had become a household name with classics like Omekagu, Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma, and Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche (Gwo gwo gwo ngwo).

Before his passing, Ejeagha’s music experienced a powerful resurgence in 2024, when comedian and content creator Brain Jotter, used his 1983 track, Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche, in a viral dance video.

Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I just read the sad news of the passing of the legendary highlife musician, songwriter, folklorist, and cultural custodian, Pa Mike Ejeagha.

“His transition marks the end of an era, but not the end of his voice — his songs will continue to echo through generations as testaments to wisdom, culture, and truth,” he said.

He praised Ejeagha for using music as a tool for teaching, healing, and preserving the philosophical depth of Igbo culture.

For over six decades, Pa Ejeagha, popularly known as Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, used music not merely as art, but as a medium for teaching, healing, and preserving the moral and philosophical wealth of the people.

“His lyrics, rich with proverbs and folk wisdom, were moral compasses for both young and old… He immortalised the essence of life—its humour, discipline, spirituality, and resilience,” he said.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Ndubuisi, on X, also expressed deep sorrow: “Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State. His fan base transcended boundaries, and he was one of the most recognisable voices in music.

“Ejeagha’s immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures,” he said.

The governor pledged the state’s commitment to immortalising Ejeagha’s memory, assuring the family of full support.

God Told Me If I Leave RCCG My First Born Will Die — Pastor Adeboye

Published

on

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has revealed that God warned him that his firstborn would die if he leaves the RCCG.

Adeboye disclosed this during the June edition of the Holy Ghost Service, themed “Destined for Greatness (Part 2),” on midnight of Saturday, June 7, at the Redemption City of God, Ogun State.

Adeboye, while speaking on the importance of divine direction and spiritual consistency, made reference to a sermon earlier delivered by his son, Pastor Leke Adeboye.

He lamented that many young Christians today frequently move from one church to another, constantly identifying as first-timers in new congregations.

Pastor Adeboye stated that when he got born again, there were three major ministries that were prominent and thriving at the time, but despite the allure of joining them, God instructed him to stay in RCCG.

When I got born again, there were three major ministries that were making waves, and they were very good. There were different temptations to go from one to another,” he recalled.

But God said to me, ‘Son, I brought you here. This is where you will stay. The day you leave this denomination, your firstborn will die.’”

He noted that RCCG was relatively unknown at the time, and its headquarters was a small building in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

Despite being a university lecturer, Adeboye said God still instructed him to submit under the leadership of his spiritual father, who had no formal education.

“I was a lecturer in the university. My father in the Lord didn’t go to secondary school, not even primary. But God said this is where you will stay,” he added.

He urged the congregation, especially the youth, to seek and remain in the place God has appointed for them.

“Discover where God wants you to stay, and stay there,” he advised.

Adeboye, however, emphasised that his statement was not a declaration of superiority over other Christian denominations.

“I am not saying we are better than any other denomination,” he clarified.
