International Widow’s Day: Group Empowers Widows With Interest-free Loan In Edo

A non-Governmental Organization (NGO) known as Forum of Nigerian Women in Politics, (FONWIP), Tuesday, empowered three widows -Enoma Patience,Shegun Helen and Odiam Juliet with the sum of N50,000 interest-free loan each to mark the 2022 International Widows’ Day Celebration in Benin City, Edo State.

The group also organized training with a theme: ‘Sustainable Solutions For Widow’s Financial Independence’for women in Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (SMSE) to address problems of management that women face in business and work.

Speaking at the event, the President of FONWIP, Florence Igbinigie, said the organization decided to mark this year’s widow’s day by building up their capacities in business and supporting them with interest-free loans to help boost their economic lives towards sustainable solutions and giving them economic independence.

Igbinigie, who was represented by Mrs. Joy Adodo said: “FONWIP, a non Governmental non-profit-making organization is established to redress issues against women and girls’ development. Today, we have decided to mark this year’s widow’s day by building up their capacities in business and supporting them with interest-free revolving loans to help boost their economic lives towards sustainable solutions and giving them economic independence.

“Widows face many issues that militate against their existence of which finance is a key determining factor. Hence this year’s theme is an attempt to show how the woman is attached to her spouse. After which at his demise, the problems faced are ignored by family members, the community, and policymakers.

“One of every ten African women above the age of fourteen is widowed and six percent are divorced, while 1.3 of approximately 258 million widow’s globally are child widows according to UN Women Report,” She said.

Mrs. Joy Igbinedion, CEO, Gifted World, in her keynote address advised that for a woman to succeed, she has to be organised, invest in herself and stay focused, adding that success to business needs patience.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Enoma Patience, thanked Igbinigie, the president of (FONWIP) for empowering them.

“I thank Hon Florence Igbingie, the president of FONWIP. I am happy that I have been empowered. I have been into petty trading and with this the volume of money, my businessss will increase, ” She said.

June 23rd is set aside every year by United Nations to look into issues affecting widows around the world and on what must be done to safeguard and advance their rights.

Xenophobic Attacks: Nigerian Students To Picket MTN, MultiChoice, Other Businesses

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS South-West Zone D, has announced plans to picket South African companies in Nigeria following the ongoing xenophobic attacks in the country.

DAILY POST reports that some Nigerians were recently killed in South Africa over the violent attacks.

A statement issued to newsmen by Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, Coordinator, NANS South-West, Zone D, said that the association is mobilizing to take decisive and lawful action by organizing peaceful picketing and mass advocacy against South African business interests operating in Nigeria.

“We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end.

N5m, N10m Zero-interest Loans: SheVentures Opens Applications For Women Entrepreneurs

First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has opened a new round of applications for its SheVentures proposition, offering zero-interest loans of up to ₦10 million to women entrepreneurs to ease access to working capital and support business growth.

The facility provides loans ranging from ₦500,000 to ₦5 million under a general category, and ₦5 million to ₦10 million for sector-specific businesses, with funding capped at up to 50% of an applicant’s average monthly turnover.

At the centre of the offering is a 0% interest rate, with all charges embedded in a transparent structure.

Repayment is structured over four or six months, allowing businesses to match obligations with their cash flow cycles.

Yemisi Edun, Managing Director and Chief Executive of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), said the initiative reflects a deliberate approach to inclusive growth.

Inclusive growth requires access to capital and the right conditions for businesses to deploy that capital effectively.

“Women-led enterprises are critical to economic activity, yet they face structural barriers.

This intervention aims to help close that gap by providing financing that supports job creation, business expansion, and long-term sustainability for women entrepreneurs.”
