[JUST IN] AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles Stranded At Libya Airport

Players and officials of the Super Eagles have been left stranded at the Al Abaq airport in Al Abaq, Libya hours after arriving in the country.
About an hour before landing, the Nigerian aircraft approached its destination, Benghazi, but it was diverted to another city, which was more than two hours’ drive from the original destination.
According to journalist, Adepoju Tobi Samuel, the Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) transport plans for the Super Eagles were disrupted during their journey to Libya.
The initial agreement and approval obtained by the NFF was for a chartered flight to land in Benghazi, a location conveniently close to Benina, just a few minutes’ drive away.

However, mid-flight, the plane was unexpectedly diverted to Abraq Airport, altering the team’s travel plans.
He tweeted, “The agreement and the approval the NFF got was for the chartered flight to land in Benghazi, a few minutes drive to Benina.
“Airborne the plane was diverted to Abraq Airport.
“The NFF transport arrangement was already in Benghazi. Despite the diversion of the plane, there were no buses provided at the Abraq Airport by the Libyan FA.
“The Super Eagles contingent has been stranded for 3+ hours and locked up at the Abraq Airport.
“NFF made another transport arrangement and they have refused to open the gates.
“Abraq Airport to Benina City is almost a three-hour drive.”

Meanwhile, Super Eagles defender, Tanimu Benjamin tweeted an update about the situation, lamenting the 4 hours spent stranded at the airport.

Benjamin wrote, “4hrs after arrival, still at the airport. Also still have 2hrs drive to the hotel.”
The Super Eagles are scheduled to take on Libya on Tuesday in the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The first leg saw the Super Eagles triumph 1-0 in Uyo, as they put themselves in good stead for a qualification ticket to next year’s AFCON in Morocco.

Lyle Foster restored South Africa’s lead five minutes after the break, but Aubrey Modiba drew the match level in the 73rd minute.
The winning goal came with eight minutes remaining, as Oswin Appollis converted from the penalty spot.
The result took South Africa to six points, one behind group winners Egypt. Both sides have qualified for the next round, alongside Nigeria and Algeria.

AFCON: Uganda Coach Lists Three Things His Team Must Do Against Nigeria

Uganda head coach Paul Put has outlined three key areas his side must focus on to secure victory against Nigeria when both teams clash in Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations tie.
Put’s side must claim all three points against the Super Eagles or risk an early exit from the competition. The Cranes have just one point in Group C after their opening two matches.
A win against Nigeria could see Uganda qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

However, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday, Put said that for Uganda to overcome Eric Chelle’s side, they must “concentrate be very prepared and win their duels” against Nigeria.
“We have to go for it [win against Nigeria] and we will do it,” Put said.
“Nigerians play at a high level in Europe, so we have to be very concentrated, very prepared and win our duels, which is one of the strong points of Nigeria.”

AFCON 2025: Lookman Scores Winner As Super Eagles Start Campaign With 2–1 Victory Over Tanzania

Ademola Lookman scored what proved to be the decisive goal as Nigeria beat Tanzania 2-1 in their opening game at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles came into the match as heavy favourites to win and dominated the opening exchanges.
After coming close a few times, the three-time champions took the lead through Semi Ajayi.

The ball was recycled following a corner-kick, before Alex Iwobi crossed it into the area for Ajayi to head home.
Tanzania equalized after Charles M’Mombwa found himself unmarked inside the area.
But two minutes later, Nigeria struck the winner through Lookman, who took a few touches and finished with his left foot.
