[JUST IN] Edo NUJ Election: SWAN Edorses Ede Agho For Vice Chairmanship Position[READ MANIFESTO INSIDE]

Edo SWAN Chairman, Kehinde Osagiede (Right) and Mr. Lucky Efese (Left) raising the hands of Mrs. Ede Agho (Middle) during SWAN meeting on Monday, October 28, 2024.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Edo State chapter has endorsed Mrs Ede Agho, for the Vice Chairmanship position in the forthcoming election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State council.

Members of the Edo SWAN endorsed Agho for the Vice Chairmanship position when the Ede Agho Campaign Organisation visited them during an inaugural meeting by the current executives of the SWAN.

Earlier, in her speech, Agho had told the SWAN members that she was going to the state council executive of the NUJ to compliment the state chairman’s work and to suggest some ideas for him.

She said with experience of over 20 years, spanning through virtually all beats, she understands very well what journalism means and what practitioners are passing through, adding that she would suggest welfare packages for the chairman that would make Edo journalists feel fine.

Agho said: “With over 20 years experience in journalism, I believe I have gained enough experience that is enough for the vice chairmanship position. I had, as a reporter, covered the Edo State Government House; the judiciary, the state house of assembly and many more.

“I suggested stipends for journalists during Oseriheimen Osunbor’s tenure as governor of Edo State. And you all would agree with me that many Edo journalists benefited from those welfare packages.

“The Press Gallery reserved for journalists in our courts in Edo State, I advocated for it when I was covering the judiciary. Before now, you may be in court to cover proceedings as journalists, while seated, someone may just come and ask you to get up from your seat. So, during one of the tribunals proceedings, I told our colleagues we should come early the next day and be all seated, and that if anyone is asked to get up from his or her seat, we should all take a walkout of the court. And really, the next day we all came early, seated, and as expected one of our colleagues was asked to get up, the person got up, and we all followed and took a walkout of the court. They were all confused in the court. Now, instead of reporting the court proceedings, journalists reported the walkout. The court, from that day, reserved seats for journalists.”

In his remarks, Mr. Kehinde Osagiede, Edo SWAN Chairman, while rolling out how Agho used her good office to help him aired his stories on NTA during his stay as Chief Press Secretary to a local government council, urged members to work for the victory of Ede Agho.

Also speaking, Ozioruva Aliu of the Vanguard newspaper appealed to SWAN members to go beyond the endorsement by going to their respective chapel to win voters for Agho.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Federal Government to retaliate against South African businesses operating in Nigeria following the recent attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Oshiomhole said the Federal Government should consider revoking the working license of South African owned companies such as MTN and DSTV.

He argued that Nigeria must respond firmly to what he described as persistent hostility against its citizens.

“I am not going to shed tears. If you hit me, I hit you. I think it is appropriate in diplomacy. It is an economic struggle,” Oshiomhole said.

He argued that while some South Africans accuse Nigerians of taking their jobs, Nigerians should return home and take over employment opportunities created by major South African companies operating in the country, including MTN and DSTV.

We will not condone any life being lost. If a crime has been committed under the South African law they have the right to bring any such person to justice, but to kill our people as if we are helpless, we will not allow that,” Oshiomhole added.
