JUST IN: FG Resumes Suspected Boko Haram Members Trial

The Federal Government has resumed the trial of suspected Boko Haram suspects.

The trial is holding at the Kainji Prosecution Project Phase IV in Niger State.

Speaking at the opening of the court session in Niger on Monday, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, said the first phase commenced in 2017.

He added that the FG in the 2017 trial secured a total of 366 convictions, while 896 others were discharged for lack of evidence.

Fagbemi also said 61 other cases were subsequently adjourned for further hearings.

He said, “It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this special event marking the resumption of the prosecution of terrorism suspects.

“This day is special for many reasons. First, the day marks yet another step forward in the journey of ensuring the security and safety of Nigeria and Nigerians, a duty that is of utmost importance to all of us gathered here, as it is the primary duty of the government to ensure the security and welfare of its citizens.

“I must acknowledge the fact that we have come a long way in this initiative. The first phase of the Kainji Prosecution Project commenced in October 2017 with remarkable achievements: we recorded a total of 366 convictions, 896 others were discharged for lack of sufficient evidence, and 61 other cases were adjourned for further hearing.

“There have been three phases of the exercise so far, spanning between October 2017 and July 2018. I must, at this point, challenge all stakeholders to ensure that the momentum is sustained, seeing how important this assignment is to the wellbeing of our beloved country and her people.”

The PUNCH reported in January that the Federal Government had concluded plans to proceed with the second phase of the prosecution of Boko Haram suspects currently being held in a military facility at Kainji, Niger State, scheduled to begin in March.

Woman Jailed For Attempting To Recruit Two Minors For Prostitution In Rivers Brothel

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday, sentenced a 40-year-old woman, Oyibo Nwankwo to one year imprisonment for trafficking underage girls.

Nwankwo was prosecuted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

The agency in a statement issued on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, said the convict attempted to recruit the victims for prostitution at a brothel in Elele.

“On May 14, 2024, Oyibo Nwankwo, a 40-year-old woman, was found guilty on two counts of an attempt to enable two underage girls to stay at a brothel in Elele Rivers State by the Federal High Court Port Harcourt, presided over by Hon. Justice S. Obile (file number: FHC/PH/141c/24),” the statement read.

“In relation to the two counts, the offender received a one-year prison sentence for each to run concurrently in accordance with section 17(1)(b) and subject to punishment under section 29 of the Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Enforcement and Administration Act of 2015. Justice is served!”

Gunmen Kidnap Popular Catholic Priest In Anambra

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have kidnapped a Catholic priest, Rev. Father Basil Chukwuemeka, at Nkpor Junction, near the commercial city Onitsha in Anambra State.

According to eyewitnesses, the reverend father was abducted from his vehicle while driving around the area.

The State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement when contacted.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, had addressed the Catholic Priests on the development in the Bishop Conference at Onitsha.

He said, “Anambra Police Command has launched a manhunt for the abductors and possible rescue of Reverend Fr. Basil Chukwuemeka, which sad incident occurred at Nkpor Junction, Onitsha.

“The Command is already working with some eyewitnesses of the incident in the ongoing operation.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam while addressing the Catholic priests allayed their fears and assured them that the Command would do everything to rescue unhurt the priest, and arrest the abductors.
