Lagos Begins Demolition Of Illegal Buildings At Trade Fair Complex

The Lagos State Government on Thursday moved to demolish illegal and unsafe structures at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, in a bid to restore order and enforce physical planning laws.
Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Jubril Gawat, who confirmed the exercise in a post on X, said the operation was targeted at “illegal developments, structures without statutory approvals, defective structures, and buildings erected on road setbacks and drainages.”
According to him, the government could no longer fold its arms while unapproved developments blocked critical infrastructure and endangered lives.
“The Lagos State Government has begun removal of illegal developments, structures without statutory approvals and defective structures, and structures built on road setback and drainages in the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo Local Government area,” Gawat said.

The operation was jointly carried out by the Ministry of Physical Planning, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority.
Also present were the Office of Infrastructure, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and security agencies who provided backup during the exercise.
Bulldozers were seen pulling down marked structures, while some traders and shop owners looked on with concern over the impact on their businesses.
The Sanwo-Olu administration has consistently warned residents against erecting buildings without proper approvals or blocking drainage channels, stressing that such violations contribute to flooding, traffic congestion, and urban disorder in Lagos.

The removal of these structures is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to protect infrastructure and safety, as Lagos remains highly congested and illegal developments blocking drainage and roads only compound flooding, traffic gridlock, and urban disorganisation.
However, past exercises have triggered backlash from displaced residents, who claim loss of homes and insufficient notice.
In Oworonshoki, for instance, many said they were not given adequate time to relocate or safeguard their belongings.
The PUNCH reports that Lagos State had run a government-mandated amnesty programme that allowed owners of unapproved or irregular buildings to regularise their structures without penalty. That window, which had been extended multiple times, recently expired, and enforcement actions have grown in various parts of the state.
As the amnesty ended, LASBCA began active removal of illegal constructions across the city, especially in areas where structures obstruct drainage channels, block road setbacks, or are deemed unsafe or defective.

Ganiyu had lodged at the popular hotel on the busy Ore–Okitipupa Road, along with the yet-to-be-identified lady, who was found dead after the suspect left the hotel room.
The lifeless body of the deceased was discovered after hotel staff entered the room with a spare key when repeated knocks went unanswered.

Police Crack Down On Criminal Network In Delta Community, Recover AK-47
The Delta State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing offensive against armed criminal networks in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area, raising further alarm over the deepening sophistication of local cult and robbery syndicates.
In a statement on Thursday, the Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the latest operation was carried out by the CP–Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) led by ASP Julius Robinson, whose sustained raids continue to expose the scale of organised criminal activity festering in and around the community.
Edafe recalled that the development follows the 24 November arrest of confessed cultists and the recovery of a pump-action gun and other incriminating exhibits.
Building on intelligence gathered from that initial bust, CP-SAT operatives intensified surveillance and launched coordinated follow-up raids across strategic hotspots in Oghara on November 25, 2025.

The sweep led to the arrest of two additional suspects identified as Justice Ikutu, 38, and Peter Okomeje, 55 — both allegedly linked to a widening criminal syndicate believed to be responsible for recent spikes in cult violence and armed robbery in the area.
According to him, a search conducted at the residence of another suspected gang member, identified as Peter Kome, led to the recovery of a loaded AK-47 rifle fitted with a double magazine and other exhibits investigators say point to a more entrenched and organised network than previously assumed.
“All suspects are currently in custody,” the Command said, adding that operatives are pursuing leads to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, praised the rapid response and tactical precision of the CP-SAT team but stressed that policing alone cannot dismantle the criminal ecosystem thriving in the region. He appealed to residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing actionable information.

He said the latest arrests come amid rising public anxiety over recurrent cult clashes, armed robbery, and gang-related killings across several Delta communities. Even as investigations deepen, the Command says it remains resolute in restoring order in Oghara and preventing the town from becoming a haven for weapon-bearing criminal networks.
In other news, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona, Chief Jerry Nkeweshe, has demanded the withdrawal of a police statement linking him to the killing of three youths in the Okwe community near Asaba, Delta State.
The Delta State Police Command had announced a manhunt for Nkeweshe and others alleged to have led an armed group that attacked the community on November 24, resulting in the deaths of the youths.

The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed the killings and said the suspects were being sought in connection with the attack.
But reacting through his lawyer, Kelechi Nnadi, on Wednesday, Nkeweshe denied any involvement and described the police statement as false and damaging.
Nnadi said his client was not in Okwe or anywhere within Asaba on the day of the incident, explaining that Nkeweshe had left the city earlier that morning for medical attention in Umunede, where he stayed throughout the day.

Court Dismisses Ex-Binance Chief’s Claims Of Unlawful Detention Against EFCC
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday, November 27, 2025 dismissed a suit filed by former Binance Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigran Gambaryan, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming unlawful and prolonged detention.
According to a statement by the EFCC, Justice Umar Mohammed dismissed the case, ruling that the court would not, under the guise of Gambaryan’s fundamental rights claims, “interfere” with the prosecutorial role of the Nigerian authorities in investigating suspected foreign exchange violations and alleged money laundering involving the Binance platform.
Gambaryan filed the suit against the EFCC and the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, seeking compensation and costs over his purported prolonged detention by security operatives in connection with the Federal Government’s money laundering and foreign exchange contravention allegations against Binance.
The EFCC added that while the proceedings lasted, its counsel, Olanrewaju Adeola, told the court that Gambaryan was lawfully detained based on charges of money laundering foreign exchange violations.

Adeola described the suit of the former Binance chief as “a gross abuse of court processes”, even as the EFCC’s position was upheld with the dismissal of the suit by the court.
The Federal Government last year October dropped all charges of money laundering against Gambaryan.
Gambaryan had been facing money laundering trial since April 2024 when he was detained in Nigeria.
A lawyer representing the EFCC, who was the prosecuting agency, announced the withdrawal of the charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 23, 2024.
Announcing the withdrawal of the charges, the lawyer said Gambaryan was only an employee of Binance, whose activities he was being prosecuted for.

The former Binance executive, in February 2025, narrated his encounter with EFCC operatives during the period of his detention in Nigeria.
Gambaryan told WIRED, a US-based media publication, that he came in contact with several other officials of the EFCC while he was being detained and accused of money laundering and tax evasion by the anti-graft agency.
He identified some of the EFCC officials he came in contact with as Olalekan Ogunjobi, a detective; Hamma Adama Bello, whom he described as a bearded man in his mid-forties; and Ahmad Sa’ad Abubakar, described by Ogunjobi as the right-hand man to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
Ogunjobi professed admiration for his work as a former special agent of the IRS Criminal Investigation, the law enforcement division of the United States Tax Authority.
He told WIRED that their relationship, however, went sour as the period of his detention lengthened.
