Lawmaker Defends Ekweremadu, Says UK Police Threw His Lights To ‘Dustbin’

A member of the House of Representatives, Abdullahi Abdulkadir, has accused the United Kingdom of disregarding the status of Senator Ike Ekweremadu in the ongoing organ harvesting trial.

The lawmaker from Bauchi, in a motion he moved on Tuesday, said the UK Metropolitan Police have thrown the privileges and status of the ex-deputy senate president into the dustbin.

But from what is happening so far, we feel that all the privileges and status that he (Ekweremadu) is supposed to enjoy has been thrown to the dustbin,” he said.

He noted that if Ekweremadu can be treated like this, what becomes the fate of ordinary Nigerians.

The victim had claimed that he is 15 years old, while the Ekweremadus are saying he is 21 years based on his passport.

Mr Abdulkadir expressed concerns that the UK police may not be aware of the latest information from the Nigerian Immigration Services and National Identity Management Commission.

The lawmaker added that the UK government must work with relevant agencies in Nigeria to ensure justice.

“Concerned that the additional information emerging from the NIS and other legitimate sources including the visa issuing protocols at the UK high commission, Bank Verification Number (BVN) suggest a different narrative which might not have been available to the metropolitan police at the time of arrest and charge,” he said

However, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila assured the lawmakers that he was in contact with the High Commissioner in the UK.

He stated that all consulate assistance has been offered to Mr Ekweremadu.

Also speaking on the matter, Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu), said there is a need for justice for Mr Ekweremadu.

He noted that “it is very clear or it is an alternative narrative that shows that what may have been relied on in the haste may not be the truth.”

Following the debates, the House resolved to invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Director-General of NIMC and NIS.
