A 58-year-old man, Tuesday, February 25 appeared in an Oredo Magistrates’ Court, Benin for allegedly converting N1.6million to his personal use.

The prosecutor, ASP Patrick Agbonifo told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes on or before Jan 17, 2020 at No 43, 2ndCemenry Road, Uzebu Quarters in Benin.

Agbonifo alleged that the defendant did conspired and fraudulently converted N1.6million to his personal use which was given to him by Mr Odiase Chris-Osato without his consent.
He said the defendant, a welder, was given the money to work in the complainant’s house and only did skeleton work and use the money for his personal use.

Prosecutor said the defendant, a welder, was given the money to work in the complainant’s house and only did skeleton work and use the money for his personal use.
According to the prosecution, the defendant has made a confessional statement that he used part of the money to balanced up the payment of his Passat Wagon car, pay children school fees, settled his case in State CID, foodstuffs among others.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 516, 383,and 390(9)of the Criminal Code of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable to Edo.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Ivie Akere admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N250,000 with two surety in like sum.

Akere added that one of the sureties must be a civil servant, residence within jurisdiction and adjourned the case until March 4 for Acceleration hearing.
