Merson Reveals One Game That Will Determine If Arsenal Win Trophy This Season

Published

on

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, has said the team’s trophy hopes will come down to one match this season.

The Gunners came into this campaign as favourites to win the Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta’s men have finished runners-up behind Manchester City in the last two years.

However, despite a strong start, Arsenal are trying to keep pace with league leaders Liverpool.

Arne Slot’s side have lost just one league fixture all season, and remain in contention in all four competitions.

Arsenal are only left in the Premier League and Champions League, after they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United.

They’ve got two [trophies left to win], one they could be out of by Wednesday night in my opinion,” Merson said on Sky Sports.

“If Liverpool wins at Everton, that’ll be nine points clear with 15 odd games left. They’d have to lose four of them which I think would be impossible. To me, it comes down to Wednesday.

“I did half-fancy them in the Champions League but I’ve just seen them get destroyed by Newcastle over two legs and – no disrespect – there’s a lot better teams than Newcastle in the Champions League knockout phase, so for me, they’re right up against it.”

The 24-year-old shot-stopper was expected to compete for the number one position with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but he made just 11 Premier League appearances over the two seasons.

However, while the arrival of Alonso to Stamford Bridge could lead to a change in fortunes for Jorgensen, the report added that the Danish star has already expressed his desire to leave Chelsea this summer to get more regular playing game-time elsewhere.

Chelsea had blocked a potential exit for Jorgensen in the January transfer window, but the Premier League west London club are now open to a sale, with European and English clubs expected to explore a deal for the goalkeeper.

“People might look at Kobbie Mainoo but I don’t think he’s improved. It was just the fact he wasn’t playing under the former manager so it wasn’t good or bad.”

Shaw enjoyed one of his most consistent seasons at Man United and started all of Man United’s Premier League games.
