No fewer than 47 persons were on Friday convicted by an Urukpota Mobile Court, Benin, for various offences.
Offences ranging from non-use of face mask as laid down by the COVID-19 rules; illegal parking; display of wares for commercial purpose at an unauthorized places and collection of waste without government accreditation were committed by the convicts.
Out of the 47 convicts, 25 persons were convicted for parking in an unauthorized places; 13 persons were convicted for non-use of face mask; eight convicted for displaying wares in an unauthorised places and one person for collecting waste without accreditation.
The Prosecuting counsel, Mr G O Odoyibo, said that the 47 convicts were apprehended within Benin metropolis, adding that they all pleaded liable to the offences.
The Presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. Mutairu Oare therefore ordered the 13 convicts who were not with face mask to either pay fine of N2,000 each or carry out community services by clearing drains, grass cutting among others within King’s Square for one hour per day for two days.
Oare ordered that the convicts who parked in an unauthorized places and were arrested with their vehicles to pay fine of N25,000, while those who abandoned their vehicles and ran away to pay fine of N40,000 without option.
He further ordered that the eight convicts who displayed wares in an unauthorized places to either pay fine of N3,000 or carry out community services for one hour per day for three days, while the unaccredited waste manager should pay fine of N30,000 without option.
The Chief Magistrate said it was in line with the Correctional Centre of Non custodian regulation.
