MohBad: Seven Takeaways From Naira Marley’s Interview With Reno Omokri

As the investigation into the death of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka MohBad, continues, more details about his relationship with erstwhile label boss Afeeze Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, have begun to emerge.

In an exclusive interview with social commentator Reno Omokri, Naira Marley addressed concerns and rumours before and after the demise of MohBad.

MohBad died on September 12, 2023, leaving behind a five-month-old son.

Before his untimely death, MohBad shared multiple clips of his battered body, where he claimed to have been attacked by men allegedly affiliated with Marlian Music, the record label owned by Naira Marley.

MohBad signed a record deal with Naira Marley’s label in 2019 and exited in 2022, following issues surrounding the deceased’s need for a change of manager.

Here are seven takeaways from Naira Marley’s interview with Omokri, released Wednesday, September 27.

(1) Naira Marley maintained his innocence in the circumstances that led to MohBad’s death. He added that he had been abroad since August 31, visiting family and had yet to return.

(2) The Marlian Music boss also addressed a now-viral clip of MohBad asking people to hold Marlian Music responsible should he lose his life.

Discussing the clip, Naira Marley stated that paranoia made the deceased create the video. He said MohBad made the footage shortly after officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested some affiliates of the Marlian Music label.

He claimed he met with MohBad upon returning to Nigeria, and the deceased apologised for mentioning his name and that of the music label.

“When I got back, I met him, and he said he did not understand and apologised. I Have videos of me speaking with him,” Naira Marley stated.

(3) Naira Marley also alleged that MohBad was suicidal. He recounted a discussion with MohBad’s partner, who confirmed the singer was suicidal. According to Naira Marley, his troubles came mainly from his family.

“I was in America when his girl called me to tell me that he had locked himself in the toilet and attempted to kill himself.”

(4) Naira Marley also talked about MohBad’s mental health struggles, adding that the deceased’s parents were aware of it.

“He wanted to commit suicide again. I had to look out for him, so I tried finding out what was wrong with him so I could help, but he (MohBad) said only his parents knew what was wrong with him.

“I spoke to the parents, and they said they noticed he is not okay, but they need to take him somewhere for treatment.”

(5)Naira Marley also denied assaulting Mohbad. The artiste also confirmed his friendship with Samson Eletu, aka Sam Larry, also fingered in MohBad’s death.

(6) On Speculations that he receives royalties on MohBad’s records, Naira Marley denied this claim, saying he does not get paid for music released after the deceased departed from his label in 2022.

(7) Naira Marley also addressed rumours claiming he is responsible for DJ Splash’s ill health. According to the ‘Soapy’ crooner, this is a lie.

“DJ Splash was never signed to Marlian Music. He is not my DJ, and he got the name following a picture he took with me.

“When what happened to him, he was not at my house. I have no idea where all this is coming from. They are all lies.”

Why It Would Be Difficult For Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy To Collaborate – Music Executive

Music executive, Ubi Franklin has shared his opinion on Nigerian superstars, Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy, widely regarded as Afrobeats’ “Big 3.”

Speaking in a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Franklin explained that it would be difficult for the trio to collaborate, stressing that their positions as the “Big 3” make them rivals rather than collaborators.

The talent manager noted that there are fierce competitors in every industry, using the rivalry between top Nigerian banks to buttress his point.

He, however, claimed that the beef between the Afrobeats stars isn’t beyond entertainment, emphasing that he has never heard his associate Davido gossip about Wizkid and Burna Boy to his inner circle and he believes it’s mutual.

“It would be difficult for Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy to come together. I will speak for Davido, I have never heard him for once said something ill about Wizkid or Burna Boy. And I’m sure it’s the same for them. But the environment [industry] they are will make it difficult for them to work together.

“It’s like the rivalry between the top banks in Nigeria. In every industry, there is the big 3,” he stated.

Entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, on Friday shared on Facebook how the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, once surprised him with a “Ghana Must Go” bag filled with things one can “never imagine.”

In the post titled “The Day Peter Obi Surprised Me With Ghana Must Go,” Charly Boy said Obi phoned him around 1 a.m. to request an early-morning visit.

Charly Boy wrote in pidgin, “Peter Obi call me say, ‘My Senior bros, I wan come see you, but I no too sure if u fit don wake about the time I for like come.’ Like what time? I asked. ‘Maybe around 5:30 or 6.’

“Na so u wan disturb my early momo exercise parole and my scooter ride? I queried. Without overthinking it, I said ok. Anything for my Presido. Sharp, sharp, by exactly 5:45 am Obi show. No African time, a man of his word.

“As I come downstairs to meet him, na so I see one big Ghana Must Go by the entrance of my sitting room. I look the bag, I just dey wonder, wetin fit dey inside this bag?”

According to him, they spent nearly two hours discussing politics, Nigeria and family matters.

After Obi left, Charly Boy said he peeped into the large bag the politician had brought along, only to find it filled with traditional snacks.

He narrated, “We siddon gist about Nigeria, about politics, about family etc, for almost 2 hours. Na so Obi come say, ‘See small thing I bring for you.’ I said, Thank you, sir, without even opening it.

“As Obi waka go, I say make I peep inside this bag. My people, you can never imagine wetin full inside this bag.

“Inside the bag were 3 bottles of roasted groundnuts. Many alegator peppers, kola nuts, pawpaw, oranges, agara, mangos, bananas etc. wey Obi pack by himself. I just no know when I fall for ground begin laugh.”

Charly Boy said he called Obi to express his gratitude, only for the politician to tell him, “Senior I no fit give you money, but I fit give you this one, na my hand pick.’ Which kind native intelligence pass this one. Dis Peter na Okute. But I love the bobo no be here. Na so I say, Obi thank you oh.”

The activist noted that the gesture touched him more than money could, and was a reminder that life is not too hard.

“Sometimes na the little things go remind you say life no too hard. Na kolanut and bitter kola wey Obi dash me sweet me pass money,” he wrote.

Charly Boy, a public promoter of Peter Obi, has always vocalised his support for the politician.

In 2023, he declared his intention to walk naked on the street to jubilate if Obi emerged victorious at the election petitions tribunal.

Celebrating Charly Boy’s Birthday in 2023, Obi had also stated that Nigeria needs more men like the activist “who can speak truth to power and hold the leaders accountable.”

PHOTOS: Singer Spyro Announces Engagement To Partner

Nigeria singer and songwriter Oludipe David popularly known as Spyro has announced his engagement to his partner, Janet Atom.

The “Who Is Your Guy?” crooner took to his Instagram page on Friday to make the announcement, sharing pictures of his proposal to Atom.

Spyro revealed that he met his fiancée on March 30, 2024, at 2:48 a.m. while working at a club in Lagos.

He wrote, “The 30th of March 2024, my world paused as I found love in an unexpected place (sic) at exactly 2:48am I met the answer to my prayers #_callme_njure in a Lagos Club while at work and from then till now I have lived every single day a very happy man.

“Thank you for saying YES my sweet J. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Spyro is well known for his song “Who is your Guy?” which was first released in November 2022 and re-released in March 2023 as a remix featuring Tiwa Savage.”
