NDLEA Arrests Four Hajj Pilgrims With 2.2kg Cocaine In Lagos Hotel[PHOTOS]

Men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency intercepted a cocaine shipment at Emerald Hotel, Ladipo, Oshodi, Lagos, on Wednesday and arrested four suspects, attempting to smuggle the drug to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage.

This was made known in a statement by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, shared on the agency’s website on Thursday.

According to the statement the suspects, Usman Kamorudeen (31), Olasunkanmi Owolabi (46), Fatai Yekini (38), and Ayinla Kemi (34), had prepared 200 cocaine pellets (2.20kg) to ingest before their flight.

The statement read, “Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have raided Emerald Hotel, Ladipo area of Oshodi, Lagos State where some intending pilgrims to the ongoing hajj in Saudi Arabia were lodged and caught in the act of ingesting wraps of cocaine ahead of their flight to the holy land on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Those arrested during the intelligence-led operation include Usman Kamorudeen, 31; Olasunkanmi Owolabi, 46; Fatai Yekini, 38; and a lady, Ayinla Kemi, 34.

The four suspects were lodged in two rooms in the hotel where they had prepared 200 pellets of cocaine weighing 2.20kg to swallow when NDLEA officers stormed their rooms.

“100 wraps of the Class A substance were recovered from each of the two rooms bringing the total seizure to 200 wraps. Two suspects were to swallow 100 wraps each.”

The NDLEA boss, Buba Marwa, also stated that the Agency will work with their counterparts in Saudi Arabia to ensure that the designated recipients of the seized illicit drug consignments in any part of Saudi Arabia are also traced and dealt with accordingly.

VIDEO: Lagos Residents Lament As Flood Overruns Communities

Viral videos showing flooded communities in the Ijede area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, have sparked concern online, with residents heard pleading for help as floodwaters overwhelmed their surroundings.

In a video, a woman was heard saying in Yoruba, “We are in Oko Ope in Ijede. Have mercy on us. This is our community. We can’t even enter the house, the flood has damaged everything.

“I’m not even wearing a footwear. Come and save us, today is 4th of August, 2025. Come and rescue people.”

In another video of flooded community in Ijede, a man was heard saying, “This is what I’m facing in my area in Ijede. From August 3-4, Monday morning, inside and outside my house is full of water. Big ocean. See cars inside water.”

Reacting to the flooding in a post on X.com on Monday, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, assured residents that the government is aware of the situation and is taking decisive steps to address the issue.

He wrote, “We have seen the trending video and fully understand the concerns it has raised.

“I want to assure all residents of Ikorodu that the ongoing drainage project in that area, awarded by Governor #jidesanwoolu, is designed to provide a permanent solution to the problem.”

He added that immediate steps are being taken to ease the current situation, adding, “I have directed the contractor to immediately commence excavation work toward the discharge point and to prioritise the construction of culverts.

“The concrete lining, which is part of the broader project scope, will continue once the culvert work is stabilised.”

Wahab apologised for the inconvenience being faced by residents and promised that the current discomfort is temporary.

He added, “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience residents are currently facing. This is temporary.

“What we are doing now is laying the groundwork for a permanent fix that will improve the quality of life for everyone in that area.

“We are committed to building infrastructure that works and endures.”

Recall that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency had predicted thundery and rainy weather activities across the nation from Monday to Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in some areas.

Ex-soldiers Protest In Abuja, Demand Outstanding Entitlements

Some ex-soldiers of the Nigerian Army who voluntarily disengaged in the third and fourth quarters of 2023 staged a peaceful protest on Monday in front of the Federal Ministry of Finance headquarters in Abuja, demanding the immediate payment of their outstanding entitlements.

The aggrieved ex-servicemen, who officially left the military on July 1, 2024, carried banners listing their demands, which include: complete payment of gratuity and Salary Deductions Allowance (SDA) based on the new national minimum wage, payment of housing scheme contributions, payment of NAWIS/BenFund, and settlement of their packing allowance.

The protesters, many of whom said they had served the country diligently for years, expressed frustration over the delay, describing it as unfair treatment after years of service.

Hotel Under Construction Collapses In Edo Kills Owner

Tragedy struck in the Idumoza community, Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, as a hotel building under construction caved in, killing its owner, identified as Andrew Isesere.

The incident occurred last Friday while Isesere was reportedly inside the building.

Over 20 workers who were also at the site narrowly escaped death, according to eyewitnesses.

The lifeless body of the owner was recovered from the debris on Sunday morning.

Neighbours in the area expressed concern over the quality of materials used in the construction, noting that warnings had previously been issued to the deceased.

Andrew Inegbebor, a resident who spoke to reporters, said, “The owner was told he was using low quality material. He used 12mm instead of 16mm rods for the pillars. There was no base basket at the pillars. Look at the result.”

“The building collapsed because of substandard materials that were used. There was no engineer on site. The dead owner supervised the house. The house later collapsed and killed him , but some workers escaped,” he added.

At the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said that he had not received a briefing on the incident.
