Netizens React To Rivers State House Of Assembly Demolition

Published

on

The Rivers State House of Assembly is currently under demolition on Wednesday as about 10 bulldozers drove into the premises of the Assembly complex

PUNCH Online reports that the factional Speaker, Edison Ehie, led other lawmakers loyal to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to hold a sitting early on Wednesday before the demolition began.

It was gathered that Ehie, during the session, said the complex was due for repairs following the explosion that rocked the building on October 30, 2023, saying the governor would provide an alternative place for them to sit in the meantime.

The crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly took a new turn on Monday with 27 members defecting from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state to the All Progressives Congress, PUNCH Online reports.

The lawmakers cited division within the PDP as the primary reason for their defection to the APC.

The affected lawmakers are said to be the ones loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

However, the state APC chapter has said it is open to receiving more defectors from the PDP in the state, describing the defection of the 27 members of the State House of Assembly as a welcome development.

The spokesperson for the state APC Caretaker Committee, Chibuike Ikenga, stated this while speaking to our correspondent in Port Harcourt on Monday, saying, “We are happy about this (lawmakers defection), and we expect that others will join so that we can swell the ranks of the APC and run the state properly. The defection of the lawmakers is a welcome development.”

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Federal Government to retaliate against South African businesses operating in Nigeria following the recent attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Oshiomhole said the Federal Government should consider revoking the working license of South African owned companies such as MTN and DSTV.

He argued that Nigeria must respond firmly to what he described as persistent hostility against its citizens.

“I am not going to shed tears. If you hit me, I hit you. I think it is appropriate in diplomacy. It is an economic struggle,” Oshiomhole said.

He argued that while some South Africans accuse Nigerians of taking their jobs, Nigerians should return home and take over employment opportunities created by major South African companies operating in the country, including MTN and DSTV.
