The independence celebration of Nigeria at 61 and Ebonyi State at 25 Friday recorded low participation in South east geopolitical zone, especially in Ebonyi were all markets, filling stations, transport depots were totally shut down.
DAILY POST gathered that the citizens of the state for the fear of the unknown, totally observed the sit-at-home declared by the Indigenous People Biafra, IPOB, thereby resorting to the total shutdown of all business activities in the state.
Investigation by DAILY POST revealed that major streets of Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State were deserted by people except few other streets that some youths were seen to be playing football.
It was gathered that the popular Pa Ngele Oruta township stadium which would have been used to celebrate the independence of Nigeria at 61 and Ebonyi State creation at 25 were allegedly closed to avert being vandalized by hoodlums.
Meanwhile, a team of security agencies made-up of a battalion of soldiers, police officers, Ebubeagu security outfit, Civil defense among other security agencies were seen patrolling all nooks and crannies of Ebonyi state, including the 13 LGAs of the state to avert breakdown of laws and order.
It was equally gathered that the sit-at-home ordered declared by IPOB in south East geopolitical zone prevented pupils especially in Ebonyi to come out to do match pass or even the government officials to come out and take salutes.
Recall that the governor Chief David Umahi had said “Anybody who says sit-at-home, Ebonyi people are not going to sit-at-home and I’m appealing to south east people to understand the dangers of the sit-at-home and those who are orchestrating the sit-at-home are our brothers who are outside the country.
“We are working to get means of livelihood, if those that orchestrating the sit-at-home really mean it, they should as well observe it. It is very unfortunate that those who claims to be descendants of agitation, are very funny people that are deceiving us.
“I want us to disregard the sit-at-home. No one in the world are against peaceful agitation, including agitations at home.
“And so, agitation is natural and fundamental but nobody who carries gun and wants to kill another person in the name of agitation can be justifiable. We believe strongly in south east, that even the peaceful agitation that was devoid of venom and hate speeches have been hijacked by people who have ulterior motives,” he said.
Drama As Ortom Busts Illegal Revenue Checkpoint In Benue, Arrests Operators [PHOTOS]
Luck ran out on a gang of illegal checkpoint operators at Abinsi, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday, October 24, 2021, when Governor Samuel Ortom busted their operations.
Governor Ortom’s attention was drawn to the activities of the illegal revenue operators when he noticed the harassment of heavy-duty vehicles that were detained at the checkpoint on his way from Kwande Local Government.
He then ordered his convoy to stop to find out why many vehicles were parked at the checkpoint.
As soon as he alighted from his car, some of the youths at the checkpoint took to their heels.
He discovered, during an interaction with drivers of the vehicles, that the checkpoint operators were collecting money from motorists without issuing them receipts, a development that prompted the Governor to order the arrest of four of the operators who could not run.
The Governor directed that those who fled should also be apprehended and thoroughly investigated alongside the four suspects to unravel benefactors of the proceeds from their illegal collections.
He explained that within a very short time, the checkpoint operators collected more than N20,000 from the commuters without issuing them receipts.
Governor Ortom lamented that despite the collections, nothing goes to the government as such monies are diverted into private pockets for individual use.
DAILY POST reports that he vowed to sanction the management of the Board of Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, for failure to supervise and ensure the right thing was done.
Governor Ortom said he will henceforth, personally carry out surprise checks on the activities of checkpoint operators in the state.
The four suspects were then handed over to the Police for further investigation.
