As a way of showing commitment to the welfare and the living conditions of its personnel and their families, the Nigerian Army has provided new infrastructure and facilities, and rehabilitated old infrastructure at the Joe Akahaan Cantonment, Makurdi, Benue State.
The Joe Akahaan Cantonment is home to personnel and families of both the 401 Special Forces Brigade and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
Commissioning the projects at the Brigade Headquarters, Makurdi, Commandant, Nigerian Navy Provost and Regulating school, Rear Admiral U.S.A Chugali, commended efforts of the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General S.M Uba, the outgoing Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel A.D Alhassan, and other senior officers whose inputs were pivotal to the successful completion of the commissioned projects.
He said, “I identified the dangers posed to the Barracks by not having a fenced main gate… I observed that no matter how late you come in, I still see civilians (around) having a field day, and I thought it’s not proper.”
Earlier in his opening remarks, outgoing Commanding Officer, 72 Special Forces (SF) Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Alhassan, explained that the different projects were embaked on to address the different needs perceived over time in the barracks.

Guests present at the event include the Commandant, Nigeria Army School of Military Engineering (NASME), Major General J.D Omali; the Acting Commander, 4 Special Forces Command, Brigadier General L.G Lepdung; the Rector, Nigerian Army College of Environmental Science and Technology (NACEST) as represented by Major C.J Nkemakolam; Special Adviser to the state Governor on Security, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Hemba (Rtd); and Representatives of the DSS and NDLEA.
