Norway Crown Princess’ Son To Stand Trial For Allegedly Raping Four Women

Marius Borg Hoiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, will go on trial on Tuesday in what is being described as the biggest scandal in the country’s modern monarchy, facing charges including the alleged rape of four women, drug offenses, and assault.

The 29-year-old crown princess’ son from a relationship before her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, has been charged with a total of 38 counts, some dating back to 2018.

He faces up to 16 years in prison if found guilty by the Oslo District Court. The trial, which is scheduled to run until March 19, is expected to draw intense media attention.

When it comes to the Norwegian royal family, it is without a doubt the biggest scandal” in its 120-year history, Trond Noren Isaksen, a historian and expert on Norway’s monarchy, told AFP.

“There have been controversies surrounding the choice of spouses, about renovations of the palace and these kinds of things, but never any real scandals involving criminal offences, let alone so many,” he said.

The most serious charges against Hoiby involve four alleged rapes and the physical and psychological abuse of several former girlfriends. He has so far only confessed to some of the lesser charges.

“Hoiby is saving his version of events for the court,” the law firm defending him told AFP.

Hoiby, known for a cultivated “bad boy” appearance, was arrested on Aug. 4, 2024, on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend the previous night.

Days later, he admitted he had acted “under the influence of alcohol and cocaine after an argument,” citing “mental troubles” and a long struggle with substance abuse.

Investigators say that case led to the discovery of several other alleged offenses, including the rape of four women while they were asleep or unconscious from alcohol, some of which were allegedly filmed.

The alleged rapes are said to have taken place in 2018, 2023, and 2024, with the most recent occurring after the police investigation had already begun.

Police last week announced six additional charges, including a “serious narcotics offence” from 2020 involving the transportation of 3.5 kilograms of marijuana without financial compensation, a crime Hoiby has confessed to.

The case has also drawn attention to Hoiby’s lifestyle. He holds no royal title, has no official role, and no professional career, and is financially supported by the crown prince and crown princess.

It has caused deep embarrassment for the royal family, particularly Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who is battling an incurable lung illness and is said to be torn between her roles as a mother and future queen.

In a statement released Wednesday, Crown Prince Haakon said neither he nor Mette-Marit plans to attend the trial.

Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by this case. It has an impact on the individuals, their families, and all those who care about them. We understand that this is a difficult time for many of you, and we sympathise,” the statement said.

At the same time, it is reassuring to know that we live in a state governed by the rule of law. I am confident that those responsible for overseeing the proceedings will ensure that the trial is conducted in as orderly, proper, and just a manner as possible,” it added.

Prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo has stressed that the law applies equally to everyone.

“Regardless of their social status, origin or family ties,” he said, adding that this means Hoiby should neither receive leniency nor harsher treatment because of his family background.

Hoiby was raised by the royal couple alongside his step-siblings, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, but unlike them, he has no public duties.

Haakon reiterated that distinction in his statement, describing Hoiby as “autonomous.”

Marius Borg Høiby is not a member of the Royal House of Norway and is therefore autonomous. We care about him, and he is an important member of our family. He is a citizen of Norway and, as such, has the same responsibilities as everyone else — as well as the same rights,” he said.

Prosecutors said the most serious offenses carry prison sentences of up to 10 years, which could rise to a maximum of 16 years if Hoiby is convicted on multiple counts.

The scandal, coming after controversy surrounding Princess Martha Louise’s marriage to a self-proclaimed American shaman in 2024, has dented the image of the royal family, though public support remains strong.

An opinion poll published Wednesday by public broadcaster NRK showed that 70% of respondents still support the monarchy, down from 81% in 2017.

People feel compassion for an aging royal couple, who are obviously completely innocent in this matter,” said Carl-Erik Grimstad, a former palace employee turned author, referring to King Harald and Queen Sonja.

“And in times of geopolitical turbulence, people often rally around the symbols closest to them,” he added.

FG Summons S. African Envoy Over Rising Xenophobic Attacks On Nigerians

The Federal Government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa in Abuja over renewed concerns about xenophobic attacks and protests targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians, living in that country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the envoy is expected at its headquarters on Monday, May 4, 2026, for a high-level engagement aimed at addressing the growing tension and safeguarding bilateral relations between both countries.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Nigeria would formally express its “profound concern” over recent developments in South Africa, particularly reports of harassment, violence, and destruction of property belonging to foreign nationals.

According to the ministry, the meeting will focus on ongoing demonstrations by various groups in South Africa and documented cases of attacks on Nigerians and their businesses in parts of the country.

It added that discussions would also address ongoing demonstrations by various groups within South Africa and documented instances of mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses.

The ministry acknowledged growing anger among Nigerians over reports of xenophobic violence but urged restraint, stressing that diplomatic engagement remained the preferred channel for resolution.

It assured Nigerians that the Federal Government was actively engaging South African authorities to ensure the protection of its citizens abroad.

The Ministry is aware of the growing discontent among Nigerians concerning the treatment of their nationals in South Africa. Nevertheless, it implores the Nigerian public to remain calm and reiterates the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of Nigerian citizens residing in South Africa,” the statement added.

The latest diplomatic move comes amid renewed reports of xenophobic tensions in parts of South Africa, where foreign-owned businesses have occasionally been targeted during protests linked to unemployment and economic hardship.

South Africa has a history of xenophobic violence dating back to 2008, with subsequent flare-ups in 2015 and 2019, when mobs attacked migrants, looted shops, and displaced thousands of foreign nationals across several provinces.

In past incidents, Nigerians and other African nationals were among those affected, prompting strong diplomatic reactions from Abuja and calls for stronger protection of foreign communities.

While South African authorities have repeatedly condemned such attacks and deployed security forces to restore order during outbreaks of violence, concerns have persisted over recurring hostility in some communities.

Mississippi Man ‘Kills Mother, Flushes Her Remains Down Toilet’

A 29-year-old Mississippi man, Zachary Lavel Jackson Jr., has been charged with multiple offences, including first-degree murder, over the death of his mother, Lana Brown Bradley, after deputies responded to her Natchez home on April 4 following a missing person report from relatives.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to Bradley’s residence after her oldest son was unable to reach her the previous day.

Jackson was initially identified as a family member before investigators confirmed he was her son.

Sheriff Travis Patten described the case as deeply disturbing.“This is by far the most heinous crime that I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life. We weren’t out there that day; this was one of those things when we walked up.

This was one of those cases that you will never, ever forget in your life. This is the type of case that follows you home,” Patten told WJTV.

According to the sheriff, deputies noticed signs of a recent cleanup when they arrived at the home.

“As soon as they walked in the house, they could just see where somebody had been cleaning up, and they could smell chemicals all throughout the house.

“Floor was extremely slippery. And the older son said that this is just unusual for the youngest son to be cleaning up the house like that,” Patten explained.

Jackson, the youngest son, was found in a bathroom, where deputies allegedly made a discovery that became central to the investigation.

“I can say what was in the toilet, and it was her flesh. He chopped her up in pieces and dismembered her in a way that whoever came looking for her would have to do their due diligence to find her, and that’s just what we did,” the sheriff said.

Authorities said Jackson allegedly placed parts of his mother’s body in a suitcase and attempted to dispose of other remains.

Jackson faces charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, mayhem and tampering with evidence.

Investigators said Bradley, a retired teacher, had recently sought to evict her son from the home. Patten, citing family interviews, said Jackson was believed to be mentally unstable but also noted that his actions appeared deliberate.

“He had threatened her the day before because she was looking to have him evicted from the home.

“She was in the process of doing so and had just gone to court the day before to have him removed from the home,” Patten explained.
